cpld005 Posted September 27, 2006 Posted September 27, 2006 tried running modules at defualt settings on mobo and they fail with 20 errors in memtest. Both sticks have issues passing memtest on first run, tried each by themselves and both fail on first run 1 stick gets 23 errors, 2nd stick gives 15 errors. I need to have this ram rma'd as soon as possible.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 27, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 27, 2006 Getting errors with both modules would suggest some other problem, can you tell me the test you got errors on and the bios settings you had set for both CPU and memory? In addition, the PSU you have may not be enough for the system configuration you have.
cpld005 Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 P5b is at stock speeds with memeory set to 5-5-5-12 as it says on the module. volts are at 2.1. the powersupply is fine, I have 2 non-matche sticks of XMS-5300C4 that pass all memory tests in memtest, and are completely prime stable for 24 hours at default, and 800Mhz operation. Bios is the latest on Asus website.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 27, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 27, 2006 Please set the memory Frequency at DDR2-667 and see if they will pass!
cpld005 Posted September 27, 2006 Author Posted September 27, 2006 ok, if they do what is next? i need these sticks to do 800mhz not 667.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 27, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 27, 2006 what is your CPU Frequency set to?
cpld005 Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 it is default at 1.83ghz. all volatages auto expect for mem set to 2.1v.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 28, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 28, 2006 If you have a 533 FSB CPU then I am sorry you may not be able to run that memory frequency. You would need to have a 1066 FSB CPU!
cpld005 Posted September 28, 2006 Author Posted September 28, 2006 the core 2 duo is a 1066 fsb speed processor. did you check my system specs?
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 28, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 28, 2006 According to one site the E4300 Core 2 Duo, 1.8GHz, 2MB L2 cache, is 800MHz FSB, I would try and set the memory Frequency at DDR2-667.
cpld005 Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 it is an e6300 not 4300, I dont think those processors are out yet, if they even exist, my mistake. The sticks pass up to 375mhz at DDR 667, after that errors galore.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 29, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 29, 2006 This chipset is rated at DDR2-667 and ASUS states it will run at DDR2-800 but its over clockng for the chipset. So to make sure its not a limitation I would set the tested settings and test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org 2.1 Volts at Cass 5-5-5-15 and with this MB you have to disable legacy USB when running any memory test!
cpld005 Posted September 29, 2006 Author Posted September 29, 2006 I will try that, in the meatime I am getting a new board, another asus but the P5W64 WS Professional. If there is any problem with the ram on the new MOBO I will request an RMA for the ram.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 29, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 29, 2006 According to the Intel I975X Design data sheet in section 9.2 this chipset supports DDR2/533 or DDR2/667! ASUS has stated that the MB in question P5W64 WS has native DDR2-800 support. However it has to be an over clock setting from the Intel Spec.
cpld005 Posted September 30, 2006 Author Posted September 30, 2006 thats incorrect it uses a boot strap to allow the ram to run at 800mhz without overclokcing the fsb, pci, or pcie. i would suggest you do some reading on thr P5b, P5B deluxe, and other P965, P975X based boards as they all allow you to run memory at 800mhz without overclocking.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted September 30, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted September 30, 2006 Yes but according to the Intel this chipset officially support up to DDR2-667 please see the link. The setting is in the bios but if your system will not run at DDR2-800 it may not be the memory holding you back! The point is test the modules at DDR2-667 if you have a failing module it will still fail no matter what frequency you have them at.
cpld005 Posted September 30, 2006 Author Posted September 30, 2006 they do not fail at 667, but they are rated for 800mhz operation at 5-5-5-12 timings and 2.1v. do these modules not run at that speed is all I want to know, if thatis the case, then that is considered false advertising, and would expect something to be done immediately from corsair. I am tired of going round, and round, doing tests over and over again, these modules DO NOT work at rated speeds that are clearly stated on the package.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 Yes but you are missing my point! Please see the tested settings from the link in my signature, all of our XMS modules are tested on a MB at the rated speed before they leave our factory. The MB you have will not run at the settings you are trying to run them at and according to the specifications of the chipset that may be normal. I would suggest testing the modules one at a time and or in another system to make sure you don’t have a failing module. However everything you have posted is suggesting some other problem not a failing module. I do not have a problem replacing your modules if you want to try that. Please use the RMA request found in TSXpress or follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! And please note that you are from the forum!
cpld005 Posted October 2, 2006 Author Posted October 2, 2006 The ASUS P5B is rated to run memory at 800Mhz, it even says so in Intel's spec sheet. http://www.intel.com/products/chipsets/p965/index.htm See part called Faster System Performance, it CLEARLY states that the chipset is capable of running DDR2 at 800Mhz (nowhere does it say overclock your PC to get these speeds), which this memory will not do.
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted October 2, 2006 Corsair Employee Posted October 2, 2006 Let's get them both replaced. Please use the RMA request found in TSXpress or follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! And please note that you are from the forum!
