4gb Ram

Motherboard is Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe with AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual-Core Processor. OS is windowsXP Pro x64. Have 2 pairs of CMX1024-3200CPT rated 400MHz. Computer does run with 3 sticks, but at only 333MHz single channel and 'My Computer' properties indicates only 2.5GB of ram.

With four sticks bios startup recognizes 4GB dual channel, but again only 333MHz. Windows system will not initialize at all and can only reboot to screen asking how I wish to start windows.

Have also tried doing fresh install of windows with all 4 sticks, but after initial files are loaded, setup will stop. With 3 sticks there is no problem. Any suggestions?

First, 3 DIMMs is not recommended. WIth 4 DIMMs, you will need to raise your RAM voltage to 2.8v and set the system to run at SPD timings (see manual).

Also, if you are using a 32bit version of Windows, it can only use approximately 2.7gb - 3.2gb of memory total. So, this is a limitation of the OS.

Check - have upped voltage to 2.8 and adjusted the following settings:

Cas Latency = 2.5

tRCD = 3

tRP = 3

tRAS =6

All other settings remain default, but did change mem frequency to DDR400.

Now with all four sticks bios readout is correct. After which screen asks which mode windows should start. No matter what is chosen, comes back to same screen. Any further suggestions?

It's possible your Windows install is corrupted. Just to test this, remove 2 DIMMs and try to boot and run OS with just 2 DIMMs total in dual channel.

Windows boots up with either pair of Dimms as well as combining one from each and even running 3 Dimms whether it be in channels 1-2-3 or 1-2-4.

Added switch in windows boot.ini /maxmem=4096 which now allows windows to load. All 4GB of ram appear in bios at 400MHz dual channel, but System Properties indicate only 2.5GB.

Also if in bios H/W DRAM OVER 4G Remapping is Disabled, then windows will show 3GB, but only 3 in bios as well. hmmmmm...
