3500+ and CAS 2.0?

Recommended Posts

Yes, with any of the newer AMD 64 based systems they should run at cas 2.

Hello Ram Guy,

should an AMD 64 3500+ Winchester be able to run them with CAS 2.0 ? Yesterday I bought a brand new TWINX2048-3200C2 kit and replaced my TWINX1024-3200XL kit with it. Mainboard is an A8N-SLI Deluxe with latest BIOS 1016. The TWINX1024-3200XL run perfect with 2-2-2-5 settings before but the TWINX2048-3200C2 don´t work with CAS 2.0 (random blue screens). I have to set them to 2,5-3-3-6 then it´s stable. I am using this settings now:

Memlock index value (Mhz) 400Mhz

CAS Latency=2,5

Trc=11T (Default with BIOS 1016)

Trfc=13T (Default with BIOS 1016)

Trwt=5T (Default with BIOS 1016)

Twr=3T (Default with BIOS 1016)

1T/2T memory timing=1T

I tried CAS 2.0 with 2,75V and 2,8V without success.

Nevertheless I noticed that the difference in performance is nearly nothing. Doom3 "timedemo demo1" gave 97,9 with CAS 2,0 and 97,4 with CAS 2,5.

Anyway, I am interested if I maybe got a bad pair of TWINX2048-3200C2 and if I should ask the dealer about an exchange (Memtest is OK with CAS 2,5 but NOT with CAS 2,0). Or is it just "normal" that CAS 2,0 simply doesn´t work on some MB/CPU combinations with this kit. What´s your opinion Ram Guy ?

Reset the BIOS, boot w/ 1 stick, set the appropriate settings, get into windows, shut down, install the 2nd stick, then test.

I have done exactly what you said but that didn´t help. Tested again with 2,75V and 2,80V. With 2-3-3-6 random blue screens+reboots or crashes to desktop when running benchmarks or playing games. 2,5-3-3-6 works perfect.

Ram Guy, could you please give me an advice ? twinx2048-3200c2.pdf says "2-3-3-6 on Intel and AMD based systems" but your What are the correct timings for My Module? guide says "SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T (2.5 on AMD platform)" when using this kit.

The 2-3-3-6 timings were my buying decision for this kit. Do you guarantee that this timings work on each system ? CAS 2.0 worked fine with the kit I used before, so I don´t think my board or the processor is the problem.

2-3-3-6/2T/2,75V also failed (and was clearly slower than 2,5-3-3-6/1T). One module at a time was ok.

I also retested both sticks together with 2-3-3-6/1T/2,75V with memtest and this time it strangely passed 2 times, but still had crashes to desktop under windows (xp sp2) when running 3dmark05. is windows more sensitive ?

Good news :roll:

I spoke with my dealer and he lordly offered me to try another TWINX2048-3200C2 kit. The new kit works perfect now with 2-3-3-6, even with voltage set to AUTO (2,6V according to ASUS Ai Booster).

For information, the old kit which only worked with 2,5-3-3-6 was V1.6, the new kit which works fine with 2-3-3-6 is V1.2. What I also noticed was that both sticks from the V1.6 kit had a serial number "FFFFFFFF" (according to CPU-Z). Both sticks from the V1.2 kit have 8 digits as serial. This information may be useful for you and others.

Now I am satisfied with my new Corsair kit. Thanks Ram Guy for advice and the offer for replacement. Thanks to K&M in Stuttgart-Feuerbach for the excellent service.
