Mixing RAM speeds/sizes

Ok, so I can't buy two pairs of TWIN2X2048-6400C4 for my Asus P5WDG2-WS motherboard running a Pentium 955EE, 3.46GHz under WinXp Home at the same time. Can I put a pair of 6400 sticks in 2 of the 4 slots and leave the existing pair of TWIN2X1024-5400, 512mb sticks in the remaining two slots for a total of 3gb as an interrim setup until I buy the second pair of 6400 sticks in a few weeks?

Thanks for the quick response on my last question!

Modern high speed memory controllers are very, very picky about seeing matching IC's on all of the sticks. With three gigs, it might run, it might run at a reduced speed, it might not run at all. If you absolutely need four gigs, I'd wait until I could buy all four sticks at the same time to avoid ending up with mismatched revisions between the two sets of two gigs each. Good Luck.
