Wondering if I have bad ram

I purchased a dual set of xms2 512 Mb DDR2 ram a couple of months ago and I think I just found out that one of them is faulty. I'm wondering if you can help me out. When I installed them, I had origninally had a single module of old ram in a yellow slot, so I put each one from the new set in a black slot. The computer booted up fine. But when I take away the single module in the yellow slot, it would not boot up with only the two xms2 modules installed in either the yellows or blacks. I then tried isolating the xms2 modules by only installing one at a time. I found that only one of them, when installed solo, will yield a successful boot. Is this supposed to happen? Is only one of the two modules supposed to work on its own if installed solo?

Please load setup/optimized defaults and then set the Dim Voltage to 2.1 volts (+.2 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, XMS2700C2 Cass 2-3-3-6 for example or if you have Value Select "BY SPD" and then test the module/'s one at a time with http://www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure.
