I have a bad memory module. How do I replace it?

Recommended Posts

I have a macintosh Powerbook G4 17" (the one with DDR2 memory). I recently got a valueram 1 GB chip from newegg to upgrade my system to 2 gigs. Part number vs1gsds533d2. The system started freezing up intermittantly. I removed all ram and ran the system for a day with the original mac 512 meg memory. It worked fine. I then removed it and put in the corsair valueram 1 gb chip and the system froze up within an hour. I then removed that memory stick and ran the system for a day using my previous 1 gb memory stick (transcend brand). It ran fine. I replaced that memory stick with the corsair again. The system froze within half an hour. My diagnosis is a bad memory module. It needs to be replaced under warranty, so I need an RMA and there seems to be no way of getting one without posting to this forum.

I've run several memory tests on my system with the two 1 gb chips in it. Twice they ran fine. Once the system froze up during running.

Please look up your system on our memory configurator, and then see if the reseller will let you exchange for the correct module that is listed.

I tried your configurator and it specified DDR2 PC4200 memory but with a different part number than the DDR2 PC4200 that we purchased. Does this mean that "Value Select" doesn't meet the specs or that Apple demands more than what they specified? I'm confused here.
