pnaylor
Right now I have 1GB of dual channel ddr2 533 ram. I would like to add another gig of corsair ram but I'm not sure if it will be able to function optimally next to generic ram. Would I get the benafit of using high quality corsair ram along side cheap generic ram? I'm also curious how much better I would be going for system vs value select. Thanks! Wired
It's never recommended to mix memory from different manufacturers, or part #s for that matter.
RJLeong65
It's never recommended to mix memory from different manufacturers, or part #s for that matter. It also depends on where the thread starter got his generic memory from. If that generic memory came with an OEM system, then his best choice would be the System Select modules since the System Select modules can be mixed with the memory modules which came in a prepackaged OEM system. However, if he got his generic memory somewhere else (that is, separately from the rest of his system - I classify buying generic modules at the same time from the same place as the remaining parts for a BYOC system under this latter category), then he's better off completely replacing what he has right now with a 2GB matched pair. pnaylor
The ram I have in my system now came with my machine, a dell dimension 8400. So I am getting mixed signals but it sounds like it might be a good choice to go for the system select ram that is specified for my system? Or would I be better off going through dell to get more ram?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 27, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 27, 2006 Can you tell me the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well?
pnaylor
Pentium 4 Processor 540 with HT Technology (3.20GHz, 800 FSB) according to my recipt. 3.4 GHz according to my 'System Properties'. And the ram is: 1GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 533MHz (2x512M)

pnaylor
Sounds good. Now I am wondering how much better of I would be replacing my ram. I know it would be better but I am wondering how much more benafit I will get for the extra investment. My feeling was that since I already have the ram I have I may as well use it. But it does appear that the system select ram is a littler more expensive. So I'm wondering, if I can replace my ram with value select for a little more then adding system select, maybe that would be the best rout? Also a related question would be if I were to replace my ram would I be better off getting 2 1 gig sticks or could I get better duel channeling with 4 512 sticks? Thanks! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 28, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 28, 2006 Yes you can use VS2GBKit533D2 and replace the memory you have now for best performance.
pnaylor
So is it better to have 2 duel channel 1 gig sticks or 4 512 mb sticks? I'm sorry, I imagine this is a very common question but I still have not found an answer.
Wired
2 x 1 GB > 4 x 512 MB
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 1, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 1, 2006 It's best to use 2 modules for best performance, so either 2-1.0 Gig modules or 2-512 Meg modules. But I would not suggest 4 modules if you want the best performance for your system.
