Corsair TwinX1024-3200C2 (512MBx2)Issues

It seems like every one is having issues with this memory so I'm going to post my problems etc maybe we can get this resolved who knows.

Thsi is my setup I've been running and upgrading for a while now.

[AMD Athlon XP 2800+ Barton @ 2.200MHZ (11x200MHz) @1.675v | Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0 w/1008 RedDwarf Bios & Bios Savior | Swiftech MCX462-U+Vantec Tornado 80mm | 512MB (2x256MB) Corsair TwinX 3200LL @ 2-3-3-11, 2.7VDimm | BFG 6600GT OC 128MB 8X AGP Core @ 525MHZ Mem @ 1.050MHZ | Antec TrueBlue 480W PSU | SoundStorm | Maxtor 250GB w/16MB Cache, WD 40GB | Yamaha CRW-F1E, Sony DDU1621, 3½ Floppy]

This Past Monday I order some TwinX 1024-3200C2 (512mbx2) from newegg.com and i got them today (April 12 2006) I wasn't able to put them in till later tonight but when i did the first thing i noticed that they didn't have the spring clips that always come on corsair memory which i thought was werid for those not being there. I started getting massvie slow downs in Trackmania Sunrise. I thought it was my display settings so i turned down the color adjustment that i had setup earlier today and that didn't solve it. I hadn't run memtextx86 yet so i put my floppy disk in of version 3.2 and ran it at my settings above and was really let down when i saw 8 errors.

I went back to Newegg.com where i bought these to check out if any others people had problems with the memory as well and sure enough the did. even the people that bought the TwinX 1024-3200C2PT are having the it defaults to 3-3-3-8 mem timings etc. So i put in Memtext x86 v3.2 and 1.65 on seprate floppys and started testing.

with my Cpu set at the settings i Posted above i got 8 errors in test 6 of memtest x86 (both versions)

Next after reading the posts here i reset my Bios to default settings and ran my Cpu at 12.5x166 memory settings as follows

DRAM Clock: 166 MHz

DRAM Voltage: 2.7X Volts

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

and it passed both times in memtestx86 while this is somewhat acceptable i bought this memory to run at 200mhz at 2-3-3-6.

next test i ran my overclock settings above with the ram at

DRAM Clock: 200 MHz

DRAM Voltage: 2.7X Volts

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 6T

it looked like some pyscho had gone nuts in memtestx86 i was seeing so much red and 5071 errors would defaintly be bad. So I concluded I'm running the memory at the settings it's supposed to be at and I'm getting this many errors my jaw dropped. I mean i've seen other manufacturers memory in the 10k range in errors when i use to work my old job but rarely ever in corsair maybe once or twice in the 3 years i worked there.

So i went back to newegg.com to RMA the memory and while i was doing the RMA form i started looking at the XMS line and i saw something that caught my eye. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145500

this is basically CORSAIR XMS 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM Unbuffered DDR 400 (PC 3200) Dual Channel Kit System Memory - Retail and it's at 3-3-3-8 timings which i can even read off the sticker in the picture.

I sunddenly thought well the modules look so much alike what if there is a screw up at the factory and some TwinX 1024-3200C2 2-3-3-6 are getting the TwinX 1024-3200 3-3-3-8 labels and vice versa. You never know as everythings possible. maybe someone could check/help or soemthing?

this is what's on my TwinX 1024-3200C2 that i'm sending back to newegg

CMX512-3200C2 XMS3202V5.2

0613239-0

XMS3200 512MB 400MHZ CL2

any help/comments by the staff would be most welcome or conspiracy theories by others?

Please go to the ASUS website and update to the 1010 bios. Stated on ASUS website "A7N8X BIOS 1008 for PCB revision 1.04, and 1.06 only" Most users that are having problems with this motherboard are not using the correct bios. Each motherboard rev. has a specific bios for the A7N8X.

My motherboard is a Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0 Board with a 1008 bios designed for the Rev 2.0 boards just with a newer Sata BIOS. There is no new 1010 BIOS for this Board. There is How ever a Newer BIOS for the A7N8X-E Deluxe boards which is up to 1013 now. The only other Bios for a A7N8X Deluxe is 1009 which is for Rev 1.04 and 1.06 boards.

Okay this is what i did this morning when i woke up. I had left my system unplugged and turned off all night with no memory in it. BEfore i started it to test or even put memory to test i cleared the CMOS just to make sure everything is set to stock setting sin Bios I put one stick of the TwinX1024-3200C2 and all i got was nothing. Board would not boot it up and all it said was memeory failed even when i turned it off by the powerstwich of teh case then turned it back on same thing.

So I tried the second stick and that worked so i went into my BIOS and all i changed was my FSB to stock for my Amd Athlon XP 2800+ Barton (12.5x166)

the mem settings were autodetected to be at

DRAM Clock: 166 MHz

DRAM Voltage: 2.6X Volts

SDRAM CAS Latency: 2.5T

SDRAM RAS to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

SDRAM Row Precharge (tRP): 3T

SDRAM Active to Precharge Delay (tRAS): 7T

it passed fine at that then at 2-3-3-6 at 2.7 volts Passed

then at 200mhz Fsb x 11 multi Vcore at 1.65 2-3-3-6 @ 2.7 Volts it passed

then at 200mhz Fsb x 11 multi Vcore at 1.65 2-3-3-11 @ 2.7 Volts it passed i use 11 because nforce2 boards work better with the tRAS at that timing,

I did the same settings in memtestX86 v3.2 and v1.65

i went to lunch and decided to test both sticks again in dual channel mode with memtestx86 v3.2 @ FSB 200Mhz Multi 11 1.650Vcore timings at 2-3-3-6 @ 2.7 volts it did 7 passes with no errors so when i came back and saw that i'm getting more angry cuase it seems this memeory is very flaky. I then rebooted popped in memtestX86 v1.65 at the same settings and at the first pass in test 5 it errored at 515MB and 535MB 905MB and 921MB. I just checked on it's second pass and sure enough it Failed in test 5 Again but in a wider range..

SO I'm done. I'm just going to send these back as they\ve already corruppted my insalltion of zone alarm pro and made win xp pro think that i've reinstalled otehr software that i already ahd put in before i put this memory in. I'm thinking it's either a few specific chips on each module that once they stay at load for so long they're overheating and not working right or seemthing to do with the SPD chips. I still think these could be accidently mislabled like i posted before. I'm hoping my RMA through newegg will go well.

whoa stop dont use that bios ramguy suggested!!!!

I have the same its a D type 2.0 and 1008 was the last bios.

Proper file size for our board bios' are 512 kb.

That bios is for the E version.

It'll hose your bios.

Ramguy asus website is so outdated on this model.

Its confusing to many people.

This one is for E version. E version bios file size is about 370-390kb since day one. The none E version is about 220kb. These bios updates have been there for 2 years now. I doubt Asus has kept the wrong bios for 2 years.

you'd be surprised at what asus screws up lol

seriously though, the 1008 was the last bios for the deluxe D rev 2.0

as stated by WWNSX, the 1009 was for revs 1.02 04 and 06.

the D rev 2 was a short lived pcb, which the E quickly replaced.

I have tried that 1010 bios and it hosed this bios, proving my point lol.

I have an a7n8x-x I used to hotflash the bios back to life.

I was following threads on similar problems like this at amdmb forums a few years back.

Someone called ALPHA has concluded that o/c'in with double sided ram

on 1008 wouldnt pass memtest or prime95.

I myself have ordered a 3200+ 400fsb because of this.

not a problem for me.

I have a 2500+ I bought from a mod at nvnews that is a super o/c'er but

it wont even go 1 over fsb or multiplier with dbl sided ram.

If memory servers, bios 1004 was the only one that would cope.

But I wont swear to that, but I believe that was how ALPHA got it running.

Edit: found asus links for this pcb

http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?SLanguage=en-us&model=A7N8X%20Deluxe

Alpha's page is here

http://www.senorpanadero.net/alpha_03/A7N8XFrames.htm

Hope this helps

Trust me I'm not flashing any Bios unless I know for sure where it comes from and that it's for my Asus A7N8X Deluxe Rev 2.0 I already hosed my bios once when i tried adding a sata rom from the Sillicon Image 3512 controller which i mistook for the 3112 controller that my board has. Bam corruppted bios. I had to wait for 4 months so i could save enough to order a bios savior from sweden. Why Sweden? they're the only ones that could program the bios savior so i could reflash my chip.

As for the ram it's now going back to newegg and should be there tommorrow i hope.

I don't see how leaveing the stock multiplier at 12.5 then pushing my cpu and my luck to 200MHZ = 2.5Ghz would show that the memtestX86 results are accurate or not they'd be accurate at 11 multplier by 200mhz = 2.2Ghz because you are telling the cpu manually what speed and multiplier to run at; so in turn the if you sync your memory FSB 100% to the CPU FSB it'd be running at the same speed as the FSB thus the memory would run at spec but i guess if i has left the timing selection be done by the SPD chip it'd be running at 200Mhz @ 3-3-3-8 timings which is not acceptable since corsair is saying this memory will run at 2-3-3-6 Timings at 200MHZ.

I'm not trying to piss anyone off or anything especially cosair but i really do think you guys are misleading the public with this and hiding something. I have no idea what but by the post's I've read of the "ram guy" it seems like you're trying to tell people to do the wrong things to fix their issues with your memory because many of them seem to point to or tell them to do the wrong thing. It's just a feeling i get but hey i could be wrong no ones/thing is perfect.

Well I am sorry that you are having a problem, but there are litterly thousands of people using this MB and these modules including my self. And what you have posted would suggest some other problem. But I understand and please let me know if you have any questions!

I wasnt trying to make it look like Ramguy was doing something wrong.

Asus leaves much to be desired.

I have the same mem/mb and I have it running good.

I did have a problem with a dvd drive and power supply issue.

What power supply do you have?

Okay I'm going to post this pic up to hopefully better explain my problem with the memory I just got Back from Newegg's RMA

This is a Link to newegg that shows the memory I bought from there with the Timing details. Click on detail spec's if it doesn't show up. http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145449#DetailSpecs

Okay now I got this memory last week on wednesday after going though the whole ordeal I have posted above and finally getting my RMA memory back yesterday on Wednesday; I'm even more upset  it looks EXACTLY the SAME with these specs on the Label also it came with no clips for the Heat Spreaders yet again!.

CMX512-3200C2 XMS3202V5.2

0613239-0

XMS3200 512MB 400MHZ CL2

Even though I asked Newegg for another Version Number they sent the same stuff back. I do Think it's Different because i get a different amount of memory errors back when i test with memtestX86 v1.65

I tested with that and the original Asus Bios 1008-D and the Modified RedDwarf&Trats 1008 with different RomSips and Updated Sata BIOS but no matter which bios I use This is what It shows up in CPU-Z

http://img409.imageshack.us/img409/1006/mem7me.th.jpg

the Speed Timings are Different for 133, 166, and 200FSB. SO I tested with Both Bios's and MemtestX86 v3.2 and v1.65 for each of those settings at 133, 166, and 200 FSB and sure enough the memory worked everytime with no errors. I ran each test for about 4 to 6 passes. While that's nice and all I bought the memory because it can do or is stated to be able to run at 200MHZ @ 2-3-3-6 Timings on Newegg's and Corsair's Website.

If i Adjust the timings outside those Timing specs in the Picture All Kinds of Errors at the very end of test #5 when it's at 99%. I never had this Problem with my TwinX 512MB (2x256MB x2) 3200LLPT with Timings of 2-3-2-6 or when i overclocked (200MHZ CPU FSB by 11 Multiplier instead of 166MHZ CPU FSB by 12.5 Mulitplier) and adjusted it to 2-3-3-11.

So Ram Guy is the TwinX 1024-3200C2 (512MB x2) Timings of 2-3-3-6 @ 2.75 volts that's stated at Corsair's and Newegg's Web site REally:

TwinX 1024-3200C2 (512MB x2) Timings of 2-2-2-6 @ 2.75 volts @ 133MHZ CPU FSB

TwinX 1024-3200C2 (512MB x2) Timings of 2.5-3-3-7 @ 2.75 volts @ 166MHZ CPU FSB

TwinX 1024-3200C2 (512MB x2) Timings of 3-3-3-8 @ 2.75 volts @ 200MHZ CPU FSB

I'd like to know if this is what it is or not so I can either get my money back or maybe not have problems later on if i ever have to RMA this Memory back directly to Corsair. I would also suggest Corsair change their web site policy so maybe they could advise users of changes in memory revisions etc maybe people wouldn't get so upset. just a suggestion.

I am sorry but that is published on the Data Sheet and in XMS Qualification and Testing !

And with a AMD XP CPU you have to run a 200 FSB CPU and Cas 2.5 would be suggested.

Okay i understand that but that's for a single CMX512-3200C2 Module. while what i purchased is supposed to be TwinX1024-3200C2 which is http://www.corsairmicro.com/corsair/products/specs/twinx1024-3200c2.pdf

so what your saying is don't look at the TwinX PDF but look at the CMX512-3200C2 pdf?

by what i posted earlier is this memory that i bought good or not?

also is it possible to RMA this directly back to corsair and guarnteed that i'd get a different version back if i asked for it? I'm also getting some video suttering issue with this memory even at the stable settings.
