msghoff
System: Gigabyte GA-7VT600 1394, XP3200, (2) CMS512-3200C2 memory modules, WD 80gb HDD, Plextor PX-712A, Antec 550 power supply, ATI 9800 Pro. System locks up playing games or running 3dMark2001SE. Ran Memtest86 on both modules in DIMM 1 and 2...failed. Ran Memtest86 on individual modules in DIMM 1...both failed. Both fail Test #6 Modulo 20. Ran Memtest 86 on Corsair XMS 256mb in same system and passes with no problems. Memory settings the same for the 512 and 256 sticks. Would like to return both modules under warranty.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2006 Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.7X volts (+.2 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, XMS2700C2 Cass 2-3-3-6 for example or if you have Value Select "BY SPD" and then test the module/'s one at a time with www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. msghoff
I placed both sticks in another system with similar specs running an XP3000. Memtest86 lasted only 1 minute and 40 seconds before reporting the following error: Test Pass Failing Address Good Bad 1 0 0000009a008 0.6mb 00000000 00070000 1 0 0000009a00c 0.6mb 00000000 00000300 Err-Bits Count 00070000 1 00000300 1 Should I request an RMA or should I try something else? Thanks, J.R.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2006 Please test the modules one at a time to make sure its not a MB or configuration problem like suggested previously.
msghoff
I tested them one at a time with the same results. Now I have put them back in the original system, bumped the voltage up and manually set the memory timings. Will post results. Thanks.
msghoff
The first module tested has passed the Memtest86 once and is on the second go around. Since I had to bump the voltage up from 2.5 to 2.68 (Gigabyte increase of 5%), what does this tell me? Thanks. J.R.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2006 Giga-byte is undervolting the memory. JEDEC spec for DDR400 is 2.6 Volts +- 1.0 Volts and why I suggested setting it to +.2 Volts.
msghoff
This appears to have solved the problem. Running 3dMark2001 in demo mode for over 4 hours with no problems. Is it ok to leave the voltage setting at 2.68? Thanks, J.R.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 1, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 1, 2006 Yes in fact I would suggest 2.75 Volts!
msghoff
Ok, will do. Thank you very much for the help. J.R.
