Cretain
Hi there. 2 Months ago I bought some new parts and built up my new system. Mobo is Asus P5SD2-X As Memory Modules i did choose the Corsair Value Select Kit, 1024MB(2x512) DDR2 PC4200. The problem now is, that i´m not able to run this memory in dual channel Mode. The Mobo-manual said that i have to put the memory in Bank A or Bank B but not mixed, strange thing is that A1&B1 are yellow colored an A2&B2 are black colored, giving me the feeling that i have to put the modules in the colored slots. But when I do that my systems only detects 512MB instead of 1024MB. I tried to put them in Bank A and after that in B but always dual channel mode is not active (I´m using CPU-Z to look for that). The mobo supports dual channel, 100% sure about that, so i need to find out if the valueselect-kit supports dual channel and if thats correct, why it won´t work in dual channel in my system. i hope someone here can help me, the support of my hardware dealer said that I should search for this issue at the corsair website. Im new to this Forum and my english is not the best, so please be patient with misspelling and things like that ;) Bye Cretain
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2006 Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and make sure one is not failing. if both pass http://www.memtest.org one up that would suggest a problem with the MB and I would make sure that you have the latest bios. Cretain
Hi again. Thx for the help. I have testet my RAM with memtest through the last night, 13 times passed, 0 errors. I also have the latest BIOS Version which is currently available. So what could be the problem now? i still have no dual channel. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 7, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 7, 2006 I would try and set the memory voltage to 2.1 Volts and see if the system is more stable. But if you are not getting errors in memtest that would suggest some other problem. Did you get any stop errors durring the install of the O.S. with this system? Cretain
Hi! I will try to change the voltage then. Durig OS installation everything was fine, no stop errors or other errors. Everything works fine with this system, only issue is that its a bit slow due no dual channel. I also tried to contact Asus about this, but they deletet my request and haven´t answered...nice support there :/ Bye Cretain
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 8, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 8, 2006 If the modules work one up or single channel but not when in dual channel that would suggest a power problem or a problem with the MB.
Cretain
story continues :) : After contacting the support from Asus I was helpless as before. They told me to set RAM timings manually or to set the voltage a bit higher. Tried to do these things, RAM voltage should be 1.8V i red at the shop where i bought them. It was set to 1.8V so i tried 1.9V and 2.0V. When i tried to change timings i noticed that there was only the option to set the #CAS latency, not the other timings. So i set it to 4. Since all that didn´t work out(still single channel) i ordered new Ram modules. I used the configurator tool before to see which RAM is definiteley compatible wih my board. (The Value Kit i had before was also listened in that tool as compatible with my board). So then I bought a pair of TWIN XM2S PC5400 512MB modules. Yesterday I installed them in my PC and in BIOS i restored the defaults and now it shows "Dual channels" while booting at the POST screen. Yay! ;) While the tool CPU-Z still showed me no dual channel mode and timings of 5-5-5-15 (should be 4-4-4-12 i think), it worked well. i think the tool is just not totally compatible to my board. The PC was working fine...the whole evening and night. But today at morning it rebootet 2 times(was in bath, just heard the beeps). i was just starting it and then normally i go to work and use it per remote desktop. But instead i shut it down, because of this rebooting. I didn´t change anything since yeserday evening, where it was working fine. Any suggestions what i might try now? And are there any tools with which i can test the RAM speed and and if its running in dual channel mode? Also i heard that SiS chipset sometimes makes trouble with those issues, any ideas? I´m a bit confused now and i want that damn system to be stable ;) Bye Cretain
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 16, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 16, 2006 Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.1 volts and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have (Cas 4-4-4-12), and then test the module/modules one at a time with www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure.
