Mondoman
I bought the VS2GBKIT400C3 2GB DDR kit from ZipZoomFly to upgrade my Pentium 4 Shuttle SFF system to 2GB (it's running 1GB as 2x512MB now). Upon replacing both 512MB sticks with the new 1GB sticks, it wouldn't boot. Through testing various combinations of 1GB alone and 1GB+512MB sticks, it turns out that one 1GB stick works fine either alone or with a 512MB stick, and the other causes the system to fail to boot whenever it is installed. This same bad stick causes a BIOS bootup memory test fail when installed in a second Shuttle system. Thanks for your help!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 30, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 30, 2006 You should not mix 512 Meg and 1.0 Gig modules with this system. Please make sure that you have the latest bios and then load setup defaults and set the memory voltage to 2.7 Volts and test the new modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org to be sure one is not failing. Mondoman
You should not mix 512 Meg and 1.0 Gig modules with this system. Sorry, I should have been more detailed: the good stick works fine as (a) the only stick in the system, (b)in combination with a 512MB stick. The "bad" stick doesn't allow the system to even reach the BIOS-display part of the boot process, either (a)alone, (b)with the other 1GB stick, or ©with a 512MB stick. Please make sure that you have the latest bios and then load setup defaults Yep, did that for the above test results. and set the memory voltage to 2.7 Volts Sorry, my BIOSes don't display or allow setting memory voltage. and test the new modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org to be sure one is not failing. Sorry, with the "bad" stick in the system, it won't even boot to the BIOS display, so I can't run any test program on it.
Mondoman
I have located another computer w/adjustable RAM voltage and will try the "bad" stick in it with 2.7V setting; will report back with results.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 31, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 31, 2006 If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. Mondoman
No luck on the "bad" stick, but the other stick still seems to work fine, so it looks like I need the "bad" one replaced. I will follow the procudure you pointed out under your sig. Thanks for your help!
