OSTSHomeskillet
I don't know if I have bad RAM or if I just have my settings set too high... I'm currently running 2 TWINX1024-3200XLPRO's on my ASUS P4C800 Deluxe... I ran Memtest as soon as I got my previous RMA RAM back along with a new set, it returned one error on 3 passes. I figured it was a fluke and went on with normal business until I noticed high system instability - ie, random total power offs, something I've encountered with bad RAM before, but never so quickly after the boot of the OS, especially with only one error returned... I ran the test over night and received 3 errors in 10 passes of memtest86 v3.2. I've attached a picture of this 10 pass run (note, the 10th just completed and is not shown in the picture) Please advise to a course of action to take as to whether this is a timing issue, voltage issue, or simply a corrupted OS from the damage caused by the random restarts with my previously RMA'ed RAM. I would like to prefer to use 2225 CAS at any cost... after all, I did just pay double for RAM I could have gotten for 2336... Thanks RAM guy, -Eric
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 12, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 12, 2006 Eric, with 4 modules I doubt you will be able to run then at Cas 2-2-2-5 the memory controller may need to have more relaxed settings to properly address all of the memory. But to be sure I would make sure you have Legacy USB disabled when you run any memory test with this MB. And I would use http://www.memtest.org to test them one set at a time. OSTSHomeskillet
A few more questions on the side if you don't mind RAM Guy... Will upping the voltage to 2.85 but leaving the CAS at 2-2-2-5 help at all to avoid running 2-3-3-6? Also, what issues are associated with running all 4 sticks at the same time? I ask this because from the memtest I already ran (with Legacy USB enabled) it looks like its having very few errors, probably due to the low latency, so isn't that what I'm testing for if I want all 4 sticks to run at the best they can pull off? Thanks again RAM Guy!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 12, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 12, 2006 Yes more or less, there is more loading on the memory controller when you add more memory and increasing the voltage to the memory will help, so yes I would try it and see. But to be sure you dont have a failing module I would test them one at a time at Cas 2-2-2-5 at 2.75 Volts. To make sure its not a failing or week module causing this. OSTSHomeskillet
Thanks for the technical support and advice Ram Guy! I'll be sure to add testing the RAM on the list of things I need to do to my box to get it in working order again (the OS is corrupt  ) Thanks again Ram Guy! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 13, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 13, 2006 Well I would start with testing them one at a time to be sure and then go from there.
OSTSHomeskillet
Just for clarification, when you say 'test them one at a time' do you mean one set at a time, or one stick at a time... I've already tested both pairs individually (1 set of twinx at a time) and they both passed... When running both at 2.85V it also passed, but I'm still having windows stability problems... So now this problem is probably out of your realm of expertise now - unless it would still be advantagous to test each stick one at a time, not in pairs. Thanks again Ram Guy! Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 13, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 13, 2006 I would agree with you, its likely not a memory problem. But I did not know you had tested them. Sorry if I missed that!
OSTSHomeskillet
I ran tests before with all 4 sticks, i just now did pairs and it passed, then with all 4s at 2.85 and it passed, I was just wondering if I had to do just singles to do a proper test. Can you forward me to the Motherboard guy? haha Thanks for your help Ram Guy!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted January 17, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted January 17, 2006 Sure http://www.asusforums.org the MB guy but its un-official. LOL I would try and load setup defaults and let the bios set the timings but set the voltage to 2.85 Volts and test the system with http://www.memtest.org. OSTSHomeskillet
So yeah... You thought this post was dead! Not quite yet! I got a BRAND NEW motherboard after I RMA'ed the motherboard for a second time, and previously the sticks of RAM passed with flying colors on the old board... Now it seems like ALL the sticks can't pass memtest... I've tried lower latency, single and dual configs in varying slots, varying the voltage... I'm out of ideas... Since the memory passed before on my old motherboard, does this indicate for sure that it is a bad motherboard for the 3rd time or did the RAM commit suicide without being used... Thanks again! *update* - with legacy usb turned off, one of the ram sticks that tested bad by itself before, seems to work at 2225 latency and 2.75V... What effect does legacy usb have on the ram? are there anyways to fix this? seeing how EVERYTHING on my computer for input and a lot of my storage is USB, I need usb... I will have to clear my cmos just to be able to mess with system configurations again... grrr... *2nd update* - ran memtest all night with two sticks in dual channel with legacy off and no errors... definatly need to know how to fix this legacy usb 'conflict' if thats what you can call it... Thanks Ram Guy!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted February 6, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted February 6, 2006 You will have to disable legacy USB when running any memory test with this MB. The bios will shadow some of the USB Information to memory so its bootable and a memory test may interpret this as an error.
