bad stick of xms

Recommended Posts

ok, I have an odd problem... first, to start out, I have 2 sticks of xms 3200 512mb dual channel ram in an asus a8n-sli deluxe with a AMD 64 X2 4400+ and and aspire 520w psu. The ram was being odd in the first place, (eg had to underclock it to 266 before it would be stable) and I was going to get it replaced, but I thought it was a bios problem. When I flashed the bios, it was 2% done, and then the computer restarted. When I tried to turn it back on, it did not work, so I sent the bios chip back to asus for a reflash, and I just got it back today, only to find out that the gfx card does not output anything and I am hearing an annoying voice saying "system failed memory check". After a little experimentation, I found out that the first 2 dimm slots don't work (a-1 and a-2) and that one of the modules don't work and the other module only works in slots b-1 and b-2. When I put the working module in one of those slots, I don't hear the voice haunting me anymore, but the graphics card still does not output anything. The system seems to do everything else it would normally do, except output anything to the monitor (and have anything to do with the hard drives). I have tried 2 different gfx cards, and they both don't work. They get power, but they don't do anything else. Basicly I am asking for a replacement of the bad module(s) and help if anyone might know what is happening. The Asus tech guy thinks it is the processor or the power supply and a 20% chance of it being the motherboard, and my friend thinks it is the motherboard.

ok, I have no idea how this happened, but I played around with the ram again, and now it works perfect. The module that was bad not too long ago, works fine, and the two slots that were dead yesterday work fine today... Memtest86+ finished with no errors. I am totally stumped. If this has happened to anyone else, congrats! Not to mention, my dead onboard sound card works again...
