Twitchy Temp. Display

The temperature display on my Hydrocool 200ex is acting funny. The temperature used to be consistent but now it jumps around every half-second or so and displays a different temperature. It could be 98, 100, 103, 99, 105, etc. This is causing the fan to engage high speed mode then turn off after a second, then come back on 3 seconds later. The varying fan speeds are begining to annoy me. I think perhaps there is something wrong with my PCB because earlier in the week when I had the case open, moving around the wires leading into the PCB caused the display to flicker on and off. If the PCB is indeed faulty or on its way out, can I purchase a replacement?? I am probably within my 2 year warranty period but I have no idea where my receipt is.

Thanks,

Brian

  • 1 month later...

Mine is doing something very simular. First, my unit has been working great for months. The FILL alarm goes off ever few months to add a little water, but that's it. My temps are great, confirmed on the MB and CPU/GPU. The fan will kick in high speed, the display goes blank for a second, then has a 8 going first across the display from right to left, then back across the display from left to right, beeping, does this 3 times. Once I thought it only beeped 2 times, but that might be too many beers ago! :) All of connections are good, water level is full, etc. I ran diag mode, worked fine, even shutdown my system as the instructions said it would. So, what causes the unilt to kick into high fan speed for only a second and reset the display, then drop back down? The dispaly stuff looks like some kind of reset, and the beeps must mean something. I haven't found a doc that tells us what those beeps mean, other than low water FILL, ARM 1 and 2. This new FEATURE is not any of those for sure! Is this thing about to die and cook my CPU and GPU or what?

Brian & Steve,

There had been issues with display PCB (boards) acting up in the past. However, for those units, early detection sorted them out.

Typically, when other hardware is added to the computer, more power is taken from the PSU (power supply unit). When this happens, the needed power to the HC is reduced. Thus, the 8's being display or the HC resets itself. This has been the primary issue for the HC.

Now, there is a chance that the PSU is going flaky too while under load. Have the PSU checked out too.

It is possible the display board on the HC has issues. Usually, the issues for the display board are loosening wires. These loose wires are typically on the pump and wire side of the unit going to the display PCB. Check those connections. Those connnections were originally hot-glued in place. We only know of two instances where HC units that had the hot-glue separate the wires from the display PCB.

You may need a tack-puller tool to take off the plunger pins holding the fan guards in place. Make sure it's one with a curved fork end. It's the only tool to really take the finger gards off without damaging the HC. Sears, Home-Depo, Lowes, etc. should have them.

If it comes down to the display PCB being the problem, and all the other trouble-shooting methods above do not work, check your purchase date and warranty limits. If the HC is out of warranty, contact Corsair for a new display PCB if they still have any service parts in stock to purchase.

Kind regards,

Stev

Thanks for your post. I will look into all of that. I have already been able to rule out the ps, and all my connections look ok. I'll have to buy one of those tools to check the inside wiring. Crap, how long is the warranty? I got mine just about 2 years ago this month.

Thanks again!

if your warranty is gone, open case on the circuit board is a PIC (socketed) lower left front, look very close for the notch/bevel so you put back in the same way once you remove it an place back, in the past had same trouble till i did that.

I have submitted for a rma request to have my unit fixed or replaced. If corsair won't take care of me, after buying the extremem memory for years, then I will most likely look at Thermaltake A1681 Aquarius III.

Looking for a 2 year old reciept should be tons of fun....wish me luck there...

Thanks for the other tips guys, great fourm!

Steve,

After I learned the hard way of keeping my receipt for a product, the good wife added a folder in our file cabinet just for keeping receipts due to warranty needs. It has saved us a few times too.
