allyn22
Hello, I am looking at building a system (listed below) and came to a dead stop when I got to memory choices. The last couple of PC's I built were PC133, so it's been a while. I am not a game person that wants to squeeze every last little bit of performance out of the box, but if I can I will try to if it is stable. I will be doing mainly video/music editing (Adobe Premiere, Audition & Photoshop) and am not sure if 2 GB is better than 1 GB in this respect, although I think it would be. I didn't want to spend $300+ on memory unless it was really worth it for my non-gaming use. From the few reviews that I was able to find, it didn't look like the PC6400 gave so much better performance than the PC5400, but that is one of the things I need recommendations on. Questions: (Remember - I'm not gaming) 1) 2G or 1G - I'd rather buy the memory I need now - not add later? 2) Dual channel or not? 3) PC5400 or PC6400? 4) Do you have any Corsair part recommendations you could give me. 5) Not memory related, but - do you think the Antec TX640 (400W) will be adequate for the equipment I have listed? Thank you for your time! Pentium 4 640 3.2 GHz ASUS P5WD2 Memory ?? GeForce 6600GT SoundBlaster X-Fi Platinum Antec TX640
Corsair Employee RAM GUY Posted January 11, 2006 Corsair Employee Share Posted January 11, 2006 Questions: (Remember - I'm not gaming) 1) 2G or 1G - I'd rather buy the memory I need now - not add later? A: That would be best to get the memory you plan on using and not try to upgrade later. Matching memory can be tricky at best. 2) Dual channel or not? A: Yes your MB supports Dual Channel, so you should buy two matched modules for best performance. 3) PC5400 or PC6400? A: That's really up to you, this MB will support either speed grade, however I think if you will not be over clocking Twin2x2048-5400C4 may be the best choice for you. 4) Do you have any Corsair part recommendations you could give me. A: Always get the latest bios before you load the O.S. and load setup defaults and set the tested settings from the link in my signature and I would set the memory Voltage to 2.1 Volts. 5) Not memory related, but - do you think the Antec TX640 (400W) will be adequate for the equipment I have listed? A: I would get the biggest and best PSU you can afford 500 Watt of bigger. The power supply is the life blood of your system and if its marginal you may have a system that is unpredictable. Will the PSU you asked about Work? Probably so, but I would consider a bigger unit especially if your system will have more then 2 HDD's
