Add more memory or start fresh????

Currently my system is a ASUS P4G8X Deluxe, with a Pentium 4 2.8Mhz processor, memory consists of Corsair TwinX1024-2700LLPT which gives me 1gig of memory total. I would like to add more memory, while researching this on the web, I see that the existing memory I have, is no longer manufactored, so my question is do I have to remove this memory in order to install 4gig of memory in my system or can I add more memory to the existing amount in order to get a total of 3gig memory? The mob manual isn't very clear, on mixing and matching of memory, other than mentioning that slot pairs need to be the same memory size and type. Doing research in this forum suggests that issues can arise from mixing memory size and types. I would like to have the same type of memory performance that I currently have as in the past 3 years I have not had any issues. What type of configuration and memory would you suggest? Thanks for any advice that will help me.

Let's take a step back first? Why more than 1 GB? Why 3 or 4 GB?

Believe it or not most graphics apps need at least 512mb just to start nowadays, add that to Win XP, antivirus & anything else in the background & the PC grinds to a halt. I don't understand why you think anything more than 1GB is out of the ordinary. Most days I'll be running Lightwave 3d (which has two applications for modelling & rendering) & Photoshop on Win XP Pro with Norton Internet Security. Lightwave will run on quite a modest PC considering how powerful it is but when you are trying to manipulate a model which contains over a gig of textures or adjust a hi-res image in Photoshop you need as much ram as possible. It's not unusual for workstations to contain at least 2gb & with the ability of 64bit systems to use much more some will even contain up to 16gb.

I've just checked my memory usage & I'm using nearly half a GB yet I'm not using any graphics or music software....that's why people need more than 1GB.
