Dusty_Slim
Hello, I have the dual channel 1GB kit of value ram (VS1GBKIT400) which I have installed into my EVGA NF41 mobo. The computer works fine when I install them in single channel mode, but if I try to install them in dual channel mode, the PC won't boot. I have tried all combinations of RAM in the available slots. Is my memory borked?
Wired
No, as there is no such thing as Dual Channel memory, as this is a property of the memory controller in how it handles memory. This is why you can place memory in different slot configurations on a motherboard and it will register as single or dual channel. Therefore, there's something up with a slot, the BIOS, or the memory controller.
Dusty_Slim
I've updated my BIOS to the latest revision and it still won't post when the memory is configured in dual channel mode. I have also tried the two slot combinations which should yield dual channel operation (1+3 or 2+4 for this mobo), and neither one will post. Is there a way to update the memory controller? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 16, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 16, 2005 Wait! Do you have a socket 940 MB or Socket 939?
Dusty_Slim
The EVGA NF41 board is a socket 939 board, and the Opteron 170 is a socket 939 cpu, so that's all in order.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 19, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 19, 2005 That would suggest either the MB bios you have is not new enough for the CPU core you have or you have a failing CPU.
Dusty_Slim
Oh boy. The fellows on the EVGA motherboard forums are pointing fingers at the Corsair Value Select RAM, and now fingers are getting pointed back at the motherboard. This is the first time someone has lifted a finger at the CPU. I'm a bit doubtful that it's the CPU, since I have read many board where people with this same mobo and CPU succesfully run in dual channel mode, albeit with higher end memory. Is it possible that the timings (set by SPT through the BIOS in my case) are not appropriate for dual channel operation? I can't find the Value Select products specs anywhere. I'm assuming that the settings would be no different for dual channel operation, but I'm no expert. I'm trying not to tinker with this type of thing, because the board is quite finicky, and won't post with 2 sticks in single channel mode at 1T. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 21, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 21, 2005 Well I have no problem replacing your modules if you like. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part! Or *New* Tech Support Express” and we will be happy to replace them or it! But what you have posted would suggest a bios issue or failing memory controller. And the memory controller is in the CPU. You might test the modules in another system if you can. Dusty_Slim
I just finished checking this setup with a dual channel kit of OCZ memory, with the same results. I agree that the most likely root cause is the CPU memory controller, or the motherboard memory slots 3+4. Thanks for the input RAMGUY!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 22, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 22, 2005 No problem, and please let us know how you make out!
Dusty_Slim
The memory seems to work properly in dual channel mode with the replacement motherboard. Thanks again for helping isolate the problem RAMGUY!
