A little confusion with memory test

I have intermittent memory failure (my motherboard announces this occasionally) and I ran the memtest86 and with the third round caught the failure. I saved the results, but cannot find where it went. It isn't where the software was supposed to put it.

I ran the test again, but the failure didn't show up. It's intermittent.

These failures are getting more frequent and I would like to get this problem fixed. Any ideas on where else to look for those results?

Twins. They came in the same package. Matched pair. Dual chip memory kit.

This memory kit was listed for both the motherboard and the processor, so incompatability is also not an issue.

Thank you for your response. Looking forward to hearing any other ideas you may have.

I have them in the second recommended configuration of sockets...DimmA2 and Dimm B1.

Here's the settings excluding the AGP settings:

CPU External Freq...166 MHz

CPU Frequency Multiple Setting...Auto

CPU Freq Multiple...13.0X

System Performance...Optimal

CPU Interface...Optimal

Memory Freq...Auto

Resulting Freq...Auto

Memory Timings...Optimal

SDRam Active Precharge Delay...7

SDRam RAS to CAS delay...3

SDRam RAS to precharge...3

SDRam Cas Latency...2.5T

FSB Spread Spectrum...50%

DDR Reference Voltage...2.6V

I've yet to learn how the settings work, so I put everything on Auto or Optimal. The mobo did the rest. There's miles of listings for the settings, but I don't mess with them, because I don't know what I'm doing. Overclocking is unnecessary for the average user anyway.

Please try these settings with the modules in slots 2-3.

CPU External Freq...166 MHz

CPU Frequency Multiple Setting...Auto

CPU Freq Multiple...13.0X

System Performance: User Define

CPU Interface...Optimal

Memory Freq: 100%

Resulting Freq: 166 Mhz

Memory Timings...Manual

SDRam Active Precharge Delay: 7

SDRam RAS to CAS delay: 3

SDRam RAS to precharge: 3

SDRam Cas Latency: 2.5T

FSB Spread Spectrum: Disabled

DDR Reference Voltage: 2.7V

Tried these settings, but the once again I got the "System failed memory test. Computer now booting from operating system." announcement on post, which was sooner than I expected it to happen.

Lately it will fail the memory test an average of once a week. This will be the third time this week. The failures used to be once every month or so.

I think it may be time for a warranty check. I don't want to be hearing something like, "System failed memory test. Computer unable to boot from operating system.". That would just suck.

Ram Guy

The first round of tests with MemTest86 v. 1.65, with memory in slots A2 and B1, resulted like this:

Rounds...Round 1 = first time test ran, Round 2 = second time, round 3 = third time. The test was run continuously through these three rounds.

ROUND 1

Tst = 6---Pass = 0---Failing Address = 0002ed91eb0...749.0MB---Good = fffffff7---Bad = ffbffff7---Error Bits = 00400000---Count = 1--- chan = (blank)

ROUND 2

Tst = 2---Pass = 1---Failing Address = 0002edddeb0...749.8MB---Good = ffffffff---Bad = ffbfffff---Error Bits = 00400000---Count = 1--- chan = (blank)

Tst = 3---Pass = 1---Failing Address = 0002e795eb0...743.3MB---Good = efefefef---Bad = efafefef---Error Bits = 00400000---Count = 1--- chan = (blank)

Tst = 3---Pass = 1---Failing Address = 0002e5ddeb0...741.8MB---Good = efefefef---Bad = efafefef---Error Bits = 00400000---Count = 2--- chan = (blank)

Tst = 6---Pass = 1---Failing Address = 0002f3d9eb0...755.5MB---Good = efefefef---Bad = efafefef---Error Bits = 00400000---Count = 1--- chan = (blank)

ROUND 3

Tst = 6---Pass = 2---There were a total of 59 errors. They were coming so fast I didn't have time to write them all down.

Next, I will switch slots. The chip in slot A1 will go to slot B1 and vice versa. Then I will use slots A1 and B1. If I'm still getting errors, I'll test 1 chip at a time in slot A1. I'll let you know what happens. If you would like me to write down all the errors like I did above, please post and let me know. Otherwise I'll just keep testing different configurations and simply tell you if I can find one that's error free.

Thank you soooo much for your help!

Lena
