Memory problem

Recommended Posts

Upgraded my system four or five months ago with a Corsair ValueSelect 512MB PC3200 DDR SDRAM. This was in addition to two sticks of Kingston ValueRam 256MB PC3200 I had used for over a year. Everything was running fine until last month when I suddenly started to have program crashes and then system crashes. At first I thought I had a virus but AdAware only identified some minor issues and Norton Antivirus turned up nothing. The rebooting problem only got worse. As I considered it still might be a virus I formated my drive and reinstalled WindowsXP. During the reinstall the computer crashed a couple of times but I was able to complete the install. I had formatted and reinstalled the OS in the past and never had a problem before. Unfortunately the OS continued to crash. At this point I suspected there might be a hardware problem. I then uninstalled the floppy, DVD, 2 sticks of RAM and then reinstalled one thing at a time to see if there were any issues. Finally I was able to narrow it down to the memory. With one or both of the Valueram sticks installed the system worked fine. With the Corair stick installed, either with or without the ValuRam, the crashing and rebooting problem returned. In fact, with only the Corsair installed, the OS would not completely load and would repetedly crash and reboot. I then tried the Corsair in another system that was known to be working properly - an Asus A7N8X. With only the single Corsair installed, just as with the Shuttle, the OS failed to completely load and would crash. So, unless I'm missing something, it sure looks like the Corsair ValeSelect has gone bad.

I'm using my Shuttle system as a home theater computer. The bios memory settings are set to SPD which works out to 200Mhz with timing of 3-3-3-8 at default voltage. As I need to keep fan noise to a minimum, my XP1700+ Palomino is running at 11 x 133 but at 1.65v (0.1v below spec) which lets me slow down the fan a little but still run under 40 degrees. I've been running this setup for just under two years now. Let me know if you need anything else. BTW, I did try running the CPU at stock 1.75v to see if that made any difference but it didn't help. Thanks.

Sorry for the delay. Finally got the program you noted and was able to run it.

On three attempts at the settings you provided, the Corsair memory failed to complete the test without errors. In each case the test appeared to be running fine, however at about 82 or 83% into the first pass, errors were produced. At the end of the pass the total number of errors reported was in the area of 645. Pretty much identical results on each attempt. I then tried with my other sticks of ram and after letting memtest run for several passes no errors were reported. Let me know if you need anything else. Thanks.
