mehringd
I need some help. I recently bought a 512 MB memory module 200-pin DDR SO-DIMM from ebay. My system came with a 256 module installed. When I place my new memory module in the B slot and start my computer I get this error "Windows_Registry Recovery" "One of the files containing the system's Registry data had to be recovered by use of a los or alternate copy. The recovery was successful" Then I get a blue screen flash up and my computer restarts. Any would would be greatly appriecated. Oh and the number on my memory is VS512SDS266
CandyKid
Welcome to the forums, mehringd! Dell's are very picky when it comes to memory. With anything other than the System Select modules, you'll probably have to remove all the other memory modules from your system to get it to work. The System Select modules were made to very closely follow JEDEC specifications and usually can be added to the existing OEM memory. Also, I'd try the module by itself and try to run Memtest86+ to see if it's bad. Try HERE to find compatible modules. PLUR CK
mehringd
I have forgot to include that I have tried the new memory by itself and I still get the same thing. I can't get logined in to test the memory.
CandyKid
Memtest86+ does not run from Windows. It is self-booting and has a higher probability of running than Windows does booting. How far in the boot process can you get with just the VS module? PLUR CK

CandyKid
Download THIS FILE on a computer that works and loads Windows. Probably the computer you're using to post here! Put a BLANK floppy disk into the drive. Unzip the file. Run the executable. It will copy the needed files onto the floppy disk. The disk will now NOT BE READABLE by Windows. Put the disk into your laptop, boot from the disk and Memtest will start automatically. Let it run 3 FULL passes. PLUR CK
