LarryL
Hi guys, been racking my brain on this one. New system, ASUS K8N4-E Deluxe mobo with 3700+ and TWINX1024-3200C2. Memory installed in slots 1 and 2 from initial install with default bios memory settings and it worked perfectly for about a week then after a reboot it would not come back up again into the OS. Finally pulled everything apart switching out this and that, finally got the original players to come back to life during a rebuild. That lasted another week then a reboot and the OS won't load again. After finally getting help from ASUS (used to be a big fan, their tech support gets an F- from me in customer service) they tell me to take one stick of RAM to slot 3. All of a sudden I can boot again. The manual says I should be able to take a single side or double side ram and run from slot 1, 2, or 3; but only 3 is working. ASUS guy says 1 and 3 should be used for this mobo, but manual says 1 and 2. Anyway, neither are working right now. I have tried setting the memory timings to (2 and 2.5)-3-3-6 at 2.70, 2.75V and I can't get both sticks running. I can boot one stick in slot 3 and everything works like a champ. The other stick will boot windows but I start to get errors running apps (example - installing xp sp2 one stick will work but the other one keeps failing uncompressing the distribution). If I take the good stick to slot 1 - dies trying to boot the OS with a file/registry corruption error. I am not 100% convinced that it is not a combination of the memory and board, but since one works and one doesn't I do feel that one stick is not working. Ideas? FYI, running 1010 bios which is the latest Larry
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted November 22, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted November 22, 2005 Hi Larry. From what you described my initial guess would be a motherboard issue. But let's try and figure that out for sure or at least try to ensure the memory is okay. You should run memtest on one stick of RAM at a time and in multiple slots if needed. Here are the directions you can use to run memtest: 1. Head over to http://www.memtest.org 2. Click on the link labeled "Download (Pre-built & ISOs)" 3. Next click on the link labeled "Download - Pre-Compiled package for Floppy (DOS - Win)" 4. Download the software and Unzip the program files 5. Make sure a floppy disk is inserted 6. Run the program, when it asks which drive letter type in "a:" 7. Program should finish writing, reboot off floppy disk 8. Allow memtest to run 2-3 passes I hope these instructions help you! Please let me know what happens!
tc0566
It is most likely the motherbord as this board has this problem quite frequently I have RMA'ed 4 for the problem that the refuse to boot with that exact memory you are using ..good luck if it is they have the worst support! LarryL
Well I ram the MemTest again, this time I ran it one stick at a time. Here are the results: The 1st stick: Bank 3 - 4 passes - 0 errors Bank 1 - 5 passes - 0 errors The 2nd stick: Bank 3 - 2 passes - 7168 errors Bank 1 - 0 passes (3 minutes) - 75776 errors All tests done at 2.5-3-3-6 at 2.7V Looks like there is definitely something wrong with the 2nd stick

LarryL
The modules came in on Friday and have been installed and running fine since then. Time will tell if the mobo is still a problem. Any good (free) system stress test software recommendations?
