mofo88
Hello everyone, When I bought my system in december I got 2 512 sticks of TWINX512-3200C2PRO totalling a gig for my pc. Now that I've been gaming and things such as battlefield 2 have come out...I've decided to get another gig........I made one attempt and bought them from fry's 2 more 512s same type and everything.....when I put them in....the pc wouldnt boot....I looked closely on the ram chips themselves and the only difference were the version numbers on the ram itself....model and everything were correct.....so I tried the 2 new ones by themselves and the pc was fine and booted....but when I mixed one of the old and one of the new...the pc would not boot.....so I sent the corsair back and got refunded.....but now....I'm eager to buy them again and try again if anyone has any ideas of why this happened or what I could do....please help System Specs Amd Athlon 64 3500+ 939 Asus A8v Deluxe Mobo bios version 1008.003 ram is in dual channel mode I bought it from http://www.abspc.com PS. If I get this 2nd gig will my ram clock down to 2700? will it also hurt my gaming if it does? Thanks
CMC_SAVAGE
I looked closely on the ram chips themselves and the only difference were the version numbers on the ram itself.. All 4 sticks would have to be the same Version #. If I get this 2nd gig will my ram clock down to 2700? will it also hurt my gaming if it does? It depends on the core of your CPU. If it's a Venice core, then you should be able to run 4 sticks at 400MHz.
mofo88
well by version I meant the revision number sorry....the ones i have now are like 1.0 or 1.1 when I got the new ones they were 2.0 or 2.3 I think i have the venice core...how can i check? also...I'm ordering them from new egg this time http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16820145466 I think I might need to update my bios to the newest...maybe thats why it wouldnt boot that time? Yellowbeard
No vendor that I know of is going to tell you a revision number when you order. Many times the sales person is no where near the products anyway. Also, they are aware that some computer enthusiasts prefer certain revisions or in the case of CPUs, certain steppings. Is there anywhere you can buy the memory locally retail? Atleast then, you'd be able to look at the heat spreaders and stickers before you buy. If you continue to have this problem a 2048mb TwinX kit is most likely the way to go. I think Candy Kid listed a sale at Newegg for the PC3200C2 2048 kit. Mike. mofo88
alright I got the memory and now i have 2 gigs yay!.....but it did clock down to ddr333 is there anyway to push it to ddr 400 or probably not i found out i have a newcastle core
Yellowbeard
In some cases, you can manually OC the CPU back up to DDR400 speeds. Mike.
mofo88
Well looking at a system info program and my asus probe....aparently it cant detect the memory speed see attachment (unknown) the next thing I noticed was in the cpu-Z program There is a screenshot of the (MEMORY TAB) Then the interesting thing I noticed was in the SPD tab Memory in slot 1 and 2 have only 2 columns of frequencies while memory in slot 3 and 4 have 3 columns of frequencies it also shows 200MHZ which leads me to believe I can obtain DDR400 speeds I tried changing the latencies to 3 3 3 8 but I dont think it is at ddr400 speeds *edit* I checked memtest and it still says DDR 333 (166mhz) Cas 3-3-3-8 Dual Channel 128 bit let me know what you guys think of that....i was possibly thinking of switching the slots of the pairs
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted December 14, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted December 14, 2005 The memory will downclock to DDR33 by default with more then two double ranked modules installed.
mofo88
what does double ranked mean? so what should i set the timings at then 2.5 3 3 7?
Yellowbeard
Double Ranked = Double Sided (DS) as compared to Single Sided (SS). The Memory Basics Presentation does a fine job of explaining this. Mike.
mofo88
I checked out the asus faq and they said the motherboard should be able to run at ddr 400 with my core and with 4 slots filled..... I noticed once again....if you look on my previous post with the SLOT 3 and SLOT 4 screenshot that the sticks with the newer revisions have that 3rd set of clock speeds with timings at 3 3 3 8 for 200MHZ but the sticks with the old rev. do not allow that.....if I replaced the first 2 with the old revisions is it possible that the newer corsair sticks would then allow me to switch the latencies so that it could do ddr 400 then? If then that would be a nice little fix
Wired
It's a limitation of the CPU, not the motherboard. Open up CPU-Z, first tab, what core does it say you've got?
mofo88
newcastle :( its just that the cpu z pic of the newer revision shows that ddr 400 speed at the higher latency leaves me with hope lol
mofo88
Blue screen and page fault problem BSOD when I had the memory with the older revisions paired together (slots1 and 3) and the newer memory (slots 2 and 4) I started getting bsod and couldnt get into windows....getting a page fault problem and everything.....so I took out the memory and put one of the old revisions paired with one with newer revisions and everything has been fine....memtest passed fine after 5 hours as well.......perhaps it was just a strange fluke? mofo88
Well.....I upgraded my cpu to an x2 4400+ and the memory still downclocks......I still think it is the older revisions of the memory not being compatible with the newer!
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted July 29, 2006 Corsair Employees Share Posted July 29, 2006 It will be default with 4 modules, but if you have an E-6 Core CPU you should be able to manually set the frequency to run at DDR400!
