"Following file is missing or corrupt. . ." after installing new memory

I have a Compaq Presario 1700T laptop using Windows XP that desperately needed more memory. I ordered a 256MB Corsair card from newegg.com and received it yesterday. After I installed it and started the computer I got the following message: "Following file is missing or corrupt: system32/DRIVERS/pci.sys" As soon as I took out the memory card the computer went back to working like normal.

Why is this happening and what do I need to do in order to be able to use my new memory?

Thanks!

Welcome to the forums, Chadrenne!

Unless you bought a System Select module (I.E. CMSS256MB-100SOD), then the chances of getting it to work are fairly slim.

Notebooks are very picky about additional memory modues being used and the modules must adhere to a very tight set of restrictions. The System Select modules are designed to follow the JEDEC rules very closely and are qualified to be added into various systems. The module listed above has shown to work with your particular laptop.

What module did you buy?
