Hi. I'm trying to get an answer before I continue buying anymore RAM. I purchased 1 Gig of 3200LL XMS Pro (2-3-2-6-I think) and wanted to know if I can purchase the regular 3200C2 RAM (1 Gig). I read somewhere the one I have is ECC and Register, also that I cannot purchase the 3200C2 Twin Pack because those are non-parity, non-registered and would not work with what I have. Can someone advise??? I wanted to purchase the extra RAM to put into an ASUS A8V motherboard with an AMD X2 processor in the near future, so I don't want to screw up. Many thanks in advance.

If you will be using an A8V, that MOBO requires non registered unbuffered memory. There is a link on the home page with RAM GUY's memory recommendations for that MOBO.

As to your existing memory, look in the GENERAL page for the sticky to a post about "HOW TO READ THE MEMORY LABEL" and post all of the info from your current memory. Also, what MOBO are currently using?

Mike.

Dear Wired:

Thanks for the reply. I am currently using:

AMD XP1800 CPU

ASUS KT266 Motherboard

1 GIG Mushkin 2100 CL2 RAM

GAINWARD 5900XT Video w/256MB-(Will transfer)

Creative Sound Audigy 2-(Will transfer)

Seagate 80G HD

Plextor 12X CDRW Drive-(Will transfer)

Toshiba 16X DVD Drive-(Will transfer)

Antec TRU Power 550W PS-(Will transfer)

Antec Case Fans-(Will transfer)

3COM NIC TX-97-(Will transfer)

Hardware not installed for next box:

Seagate 160 SATA DRIVE

Corsair TWINX1024-3200LL PRO RAM (1 GIG) 2-3-2-6

Looking at:

AMD X2 4200 Processor

ASUS A8V Motherboard

Corsair Memory (1 or 2 Gigs)

Ok, so there you have it. That's the information.

Now, I did talk to Corsair Tech Support and they told me that the 3200LL Pro RAM I have is non-parity, unregistered, so I can use it in the planned motherboard, but I wanted to get more of the memory. Although I hit a roadblock. Corsair does not make this model anymore, so I did ask if I can use the CL2 RAM from Corsair Model #: TWINX2048-3200C2PRO ? I was told it is not recommended to mix speeds. So, finishing up, I'd like to know if I should get the additional RAM or not now? My backup plan would be to just get 2 GIGS of this Model #: TWINX2048-3200C2PRO and see what happens and if it doesn't mix with my original, then I would just plug in the 2 GIGS of Model #: TWINX2048-3200C2PRO instead.

MANY THANKS....

Yes, the A8V - based on the VIA K8T800 Pro AGP chipset - does support the X2 processor with the latest BIOS version. It's the K8T890 PCI Express chipset that does not support any X2 processors at all. (The Asus motherboard which uses the K8T890 chipset is the A8V-E series.) Therefore, if you want a VIA chipset and X2 CPU compatibility, you must stick with AGP and not go PCI Express. (This means that you want the A8V, not the A8V-E.)

I corrected the incorrect and misleading info in this post.

Hi RJLeong65:

Thanks for posting a reply. I did already look at ASUS's website: http://usa.asus.com/products4.aspx?l1=3&l2=15&l3=68&model=478&modelmenu=1 and it clearly states it supports AMD X2 processors, so I still plan on buying the motherboard because like you said I have a AGP video card, so I am stuck there.

Thanks,

Allan

I've corrected that. Read my corrected post above, and you will see why the only Socket 939 chipset that does not support the X2 is the VIA K8T890 chipset (which is a PCI Express only chipset). This means that the only current Asus Socket 939 motherboards which do not support the X2 processors are the A8V-E SE and the A8V-E Deluxe motherboards. The plain A8V and the A8V Deluxe use a different VIA chipset (the K8T800 Pro), which does support the X2 processors but locks you into AGP.

Yeah, I did take a look before deciding which motherboard to pick and I'm fully aware that I will be locked into AGP, but I just bought the card and love it so far. Also the fact I don't want to spend another few hundred to switch over to PCI Express. And who knows, the industry may switch again, so I don't want to keep following into the point of debt...hahahahahaaaa...

The consumer will always be in debt. And, those who try to stay on the cutting edge have to deal with the fact that the newest "toy" is almost obsolete by the time you tweak it :(:
