Old vs New Memory Compatibility

I just purchased 1Gig of Twinx1024-3200C2 memory. I was planning to upgrade my gaming PC from 1Gig to 2Gig. Unfortunately, I discovered that the existing RAM (exact same model by the way) was version 1.2 and the new RAM is version 5.2. They will not work together. If I try and use them the PC will not boot. Fortunately I had another PC with 1Gig of the older version 1.2 and was able to swap the new memory for that and everything worked out. However, I thought I would ask why theres no info on checking for version before trying to upgrade memory? This seems like a critical element to be considered by buyers.

Welcome to the forums, GoreRanger!

It's a good question, especially with more and more users beginning to jump upwards of 2 GB in their systems.

The answer is pretty simle, memory compaines don't rate, spec, or garauntee four modules to work in a home-user system (I.E. XMS or VS modules). Thus, the compatibility between a 1.2 and 5.2 is made rather moot. That's because lots of systems just won't run 4 modules with specced latencies or, sometimes, any stability at all.

Unfortunatly, lots of people try to take the non-reccommended upgrade path of 4 x 512 MB modules and run into difficulties, even when the revisions are matched.

Another unfortunate is that most salespeople, especially at chains, don't really have a clue. They know that DDR works in your system, but the specifics of module compatibility aren't taught at all (talking to the techs at chain after chain, they all have the same lack of knowledge).

Yes, it'd probably be good to have more information out there about these issues, but really, that's why places like this exist as well. To help people with their questions.

I guess I will count myself lucky then that I have four working DIMMs. I didn't realize that having more than 2 would be an issue. Perhaps the Corsair guy will wander by and add some enlightenment as to what we should do when looking at more than 1Gb.

I would never suggest mixing memory and if you need more than 1.0 Gig of memory I would suggest replacing what you have now with one Twinx2048-3200C2 set of modules or for best performance Twinx2048-3500LLPro.
