DownBringer
Basically, I've put the memory in, and everything runs fine, when I'm not using an high memory applications. But when I decide to play a game for instance, Far Cry the system unexpectedly hangs, freezes. This is the same in windows xp, even if I want to listen to music, the system will last around 5 minutes before hanging. I have contacted ASUS support, because at first I thougt it was my Motherboard (which it still could be, due to lack of proper support), they contacted me saying it was most likely to be my memory. So I downloaded the Memtest application and ran it, I left it going for about 30mins and still no errors reported. I'm really confused about this matter as I re-installed windows several times, thinking that it my have been a windows issue. All my current bios settings, concerning the memory, are at Automatic as the current bios restricts the ability to change the timings and voltage Thanks for any help. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 21, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 21, 2005 Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.1 volts and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, and then test the module/modules one at a time with www.memtest.org! If you get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure. Also what is your complete system configuration including your PSU?
DownBringer
My full system Configuration: XP Pro 32bit ASUS P5ND2 SLi Deluxe XMS2 2 x 512 DDR2 Memory Pentium D 830 3.0GHz Dual Core PSU HIPER Type-R 580W POV 7800GTX 256MB (Single Card) 300GB SATA HDD (Maxtor Diamond Max) 80BG SATA HDD Samsung Combo (CDRW\DVD) Optical Drive AOpen DVDRW Optical Drive Hope that helps. BTW I've run the memory in singly and still no problems. I'll try the memory in a different PC when I get the chance (sometime tommorrow)
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 21, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 21, 2005 I don’t see any problems with your configuration, and as long as you are not getting any errors there should not be any problem. Can you tell me in more detail what is happening? Like are you getting a BSOD error and if so what is the error number? Or is it just restarting with no warning? DownBringer
Sometimes it restarts without warning, sometimes the system just freezes, goes unresponsive. Ive not got any errors after rebooting.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 21, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 21, 2005 I would try and set the memory voltage to 2.1 Volts and see if that helps.
DownBringer
I just tried that - and then ran Counter-Strike Source to see how long it takes to freeze up, and in under minute of joining a game, the system froze and my primary monitor loses signal. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 21, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 21, 2005 I don’t know that counter strike is a good test as it is quite old and may not have updated support for this hardware just yet. Do you have another game you can try? Like BF1942 or BF2? Also that type of issue would suggest a driver and or Bios or possibly Power problem. But I would try a few other tests like about of 3D Mark 2003 or Sy-Soft Sandra.
DownBringer
I ran a few tests with 3DMark05 - mainly the visiual tests - After the first or second test the system just hung, I'd tried again, it got a bit further but hung again. I'm just installing BF2 right now - so I'll give that a go and back to you. UPDATE: I tried BF2, I didn't even start a game before it crashed - it crashed in menu whilst adjusting the controls. The whole system just froze. UPDATE 2: I've now got several Memory not "read" or "writen" errors when using applications, I've uploading a couple of pics: http://img484.imageshack.us/my.php?image=error12lx.jpg http://img459.imageshack.us/my.php?image=error29eg.jpg Sorry that the images are a bit big. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 24, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 24, 2005 Let's try replacing your modules. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
DownBringer
As per your instructions, I will send the memory to the reseller, if they are unhelpful then I will complete the RMA application via the link in your signature.
Yellowbeard
Can you list the specifications on your power supply, specifically the spex on the voltage rails? You have a HEAVY power demand and your problem could be power related. Mike.
DownBringer
My PSU Specs: Hiper 580W Type-R - Model: HPU-4K580-MK SLi Ready Output Voltage _ Load Range _ Regulation Ripple & Noise ________________ Min / Max _____________ Peak-to-Peak Max +5V ___________ 2.0A / 36A __ +5% ~ 5% _____ 100mV +12V __________ 0.2A / 20A __ +5% ~ 5% _____ 120mV +12V2 _________ 0.0A / 18A __ +5 ~ 5% _______ 120mV -12V __________ 0.0A / 0.8A __ +10% ~ 10% ___ 200mV +5VSB _________ 0.0A / 2.5A __ +5% ~ 5% _____ 70mV +3.3 ___________ 0.4A / 30A ___ +5% ~ 5% _____ 70mV Hope that helps. I believe that this PSU is powerful enough to power my system with only one Graphics card installed. This all might be a mute point though because it seems that the last memory tests that I did failed very very badly and it also seems that the heat spreader on the chips is slipping and sliding almost making it impossible to insert into the motherboard now. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 26, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 26, 2005 I would check with the maker of your Video cards to be sure, but as I understand it the 7800 needs about 22-24 amps per card.
Yellowbeard
I would check with the maker of your Video cards to be sure, but as I understand it the 7800 needs about 22-24 amps per card. I have heard the same figure of 22-24a for the 7800. If that is true, the above PSU does not offer that much on either rail. And, there are the other system components to consider also. Mike. DownBringer
I have checked the Point Of View graphics card manual which states that I need a 400W PSU with 12V current rating of 26A. I was under the impression that when you have two 12V rails you add these together and this can then be used to power the graphics card(s) in SLi mode. So for my PSU I have two 12V rails with a total ampage of 38A on the two rails with a possible typically current rating of 30A. It should be noted that I currently only plan to use the one graphics card in this system.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 27, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 27, 2005 That may be the issue then, as that would be telling you that you need 26 amps per card not to mention what you might need for other 12 Volts devices like HDD and CD-ROM's. +12V __________ 0.2A / 20A +12V2 _________ 0.0A / 18A
DownBringer
I have sent the memory of to Komplett anyway for their testing and hopefully they will find it at fault as well, especially with the heat spreader slipping and sliding like it is. If after replacing the memory I still have an issue then I will look at changing the PSU to one with four 12V rails for a total ampage of 60A. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted October 28, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted October 28, 2005 You will need a PSU that can provide 26 Amps to your Video card and one with 4 12 Volts rails may not work. Again I would check with the Video card maker.
DownBringer
I have verified the PSU requirements from both nVidia, other resources and the video card makers; they all report that if you have multiple 12V rails there can be combined to grant power to all 12V devices. It should also be noted that the 26A requirement of the 7800GTX is actually the requirements for it in SLi mode - therefore, you might be able to half this for a single graphics card. Well anyway, I have another question concerning my motherboard and some new memory that I brought to relace the ones that I have sent back to Komplett. The new memory modules are the XMSTWINX2-2048-6400PRO (2GB dual memory). I have set the memory timmings to auto from the motherboard (P5ND2-SLI Deluxe) BIOS (version 0802) but the post check on memory reported by the motherboard as 5-5-5-18-T2. Can you please confirm why and if this is ok, since reading the online PDF it states that the memory timmings should be 5-5-5-12-T1.
