bad VS512MB400

Recommended Posts

I have two VS512MB400 memory modules. One of them is having intermittent failures. When the second module is installed, my system will crash every hour or two. I have tried different memory slots, tried running the bad module by itself and also running with both modules installed. Whenever the bad module is installed, I will get application crashes and after a while, the system just reboots. When I have only the good module installed, my Win XP will run for weeks before I reboot. Motherboard is ABIT AV8-3rd Eye VIA K8T800 PRO, no overclocking, with Athlon 64 (939) 3000+.

Any thoughts before I RMA.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.7X volts (+.2 Volts W/Giga-Byte) and then set the timings manually to the tested settings for the specific module you have, XMS2700C2 Cass 2-3-3-6 for example or if you have Value Select "BY SPD" and then test the module/'s one at a time with www.memtest.org! If you still get errors, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem and I would test them in another system or MB to be sure.

Ram Guy...

My BIOS is set to "By SPD" for this Value Select memory. One module tested fine in a 30 minute test; the other failed with 10,000 errors in a couple of minutes. I will pursure the RMA.

Thanks for your help.

Ram Guy...

I got quick turnaround on the RMA and received a new module. I removed the good VS512MB400 and put the new one in the same slot so I could test it. MEMTEST showed about 40 errors within two minutes. Error bytes were 00aa0000 (or some subset of that e.g.00280000). I removed the bad new one, reinstalled the good one in same slot. MEMTEST ran fine. So again I have a bad VS512MB400. I did not change BIOS and it is set "By SPD".

Another RMA?

Ram Guy...

Memory has always has been at 2.7 volts. I installed the bad stick in another PC and ran the memory test. It failed intermittenently over all the tests. Error bits stayed the same 00aa0000.

I have spent too much time on this. Can I RMA now?
