i have an abit nf7-s 2.0 with a stick of xms 3500 512meg.

i just bought two sticks of xms 3200xl 512 and stuck them into the motherboard. no post. weird smell.

took out all ram, reset the bios and tried with my original stick and now i get the post screen, the usb keyboard lights up, the post screen shows for a second, monitor goes on stand by and then reverts back to post - repeating the cycle 5 times. then the monitor just goes on standby and sits there.

what the hell happened?

my PS is a seasonic super tornado 350w, ati radeon 9700pro and athlon 2700xp and i unplugged everything else from the motherboard. Tried resetting the bios 10 times, no blo.

oh yeah, im quite familiar with installation procedures, i did work as a computer assembler back in the day :) Its also pretty humid here so electrostatic discharges would be pretty unlikely.

can a dying powersupply cause this? i noticed that if i add two sticks or more, it wont even go out of standby (the monitor)

is there a significant increase in current when adding multiple dimms?

Yes, a bad power source can cause these symptoms, as can other dying hardware, but the likelyhood of RAM killing your mainboard is next to nothing unless it was installed backwards. :p

I know of a couple boards that sometimes do wierd things like this, you might want to completely disconnect the PSU from the mainboard and switch the CLRTC jumper to clear the CMOS and leave it for a couple of HOURS. Yeah, I know, but it might work... my K7N2 Delta requires about an hour of sitting there to completely reset. Friggin' wierd. FYI, this also means removing the battery.
