One way to test is to run a CPU/RAM or RAM only test. It doesn't matter much what you use. If there was a physical problem with the RAM, it will hit 80C very quickly. If it rides along at lower than game temps, you know this is a case heat management issue. While two drop 2 rungs in CAS Latency, you go up +400 in frequency. In nearly all cases that is a small advantage for the higher frequency set --- at least in benchmarks. It is unlikely you will be able to notice any difference at all in most games, except some of the turn-based strategy games that throw a ton of things in there on each round.
