H150i Elite LCD coolant temps

Hey everyone,

so i've been using the H150i Elite LCD 360mm now for a while.

Before I'l say anything else... Yes it's beautiful! 

But there's a "Problem" i have with it. My coolant temps.

So they've been quiet "high" now for a while. 

  • About 32/33 degrees celcius in idle
  • 35/36 while watching youtube or browsing
  • Gaming isn't that relevant for me now because they never go above 45

Before anyone say's anything... I know that acceptable in terms of temperatues while gaming. Nothings getting damaged.

But the idle temps, as well as the temps while browsing/watching youtube are just too high for me!

My CPU doesn't even reach 70 degrees celcius (with spikes) while doing all that stuff (5900x).

Everything is inside the Dynamic XL from Lian-Li. The aio is mounted at the top.

Now i know that some people will tell me that i should put it to the side as intake. I already did that and the temps didn't change that much.

As fans i use the LL120 from Corsair. I've a total of 10 fans in my case. 

  • 3 Top (with AIO) as exhaust
  • 1 on the left side as exhaust
  • 3 Bottom and 3 on the Side as intake.

It don't know why but it just annoys me. I've used different aio's before, even older ones from corsair (with the same hardware) and the Coolant temps were never that "high". 

If you need anyhing else in order to help me let me know 🙂 (Sorry btw if there have been a lot of spelling mistakes...I'm not a native speaker)

this temps would be a dream for me  😉

 

But if you still want to have lower temps, increase the RPM for the AIO-Fans.

If this is not enough, change the AIO-Fans against "ML120RGB Elite Premium" or "AF120RGB Elite". These fans have higher static pressure to push the air through the radiator.

AF120 > 2,68 mm/H2O

Make sure your bios is updated. If you are on an old version, it's possible it doesn't contain yet the fixes AMD did on the insane Vcore they were pushing on CPUs for idle boost.

Apart from that, it looks totally normal for Ryzen. Even with the fixes they still boost fairly high with Vcore and consistently run hotter than their Intel counterparts when "Idle"

The other ting is seeing what "idle" is. If your CPU is constantly loaded at 3 - 4% with background processes, it will be running on higher Vcore all the time and stay warm.

Bios is updated. This thread is about the AIO liquid temps. My ryzen temps are decent so far. Yes, it happens sometimes that the ryzen 5900x has spikes up to 81 degrees celcius but that doesn't bother me that much. It's more so about the coolant temp of the aio that doesn't seem right.

Hm sounds familiar. I've heard this before. Maybe I'll switch out all my fans for the AF120RGB elite fans. I've heard that those perform better anyway compared to the ll120.

So these are screenshots i took after running 3DMark with gsync on. Can anyone tell if there might be problems with e.g. voltage? 

Maybe if something is wrong with voltages it could have an effect on the aio coolant temps im some way...

the voltages affect temperature directly, that's why i asked. But if your bios is up to date, it's not the old Ryzen issue. It was mostly visible in idle actually, that's where the CPU boost voltages the most.

It's still a "characteristic" of Ryzen to run hotter at idle. small background tasks will keep the voltages (and power) go up and down, and usually higher than its Intel counterparts.

Since you tried the AIO as air intake with not much success, maybe it's simply that the CPU is not exactly idle, and some background tasks keep it boosting constantly.

When i see it pulling 50-70w doing apparently nothing, maybe you should look at what is keeping it busy.

woo, on the phone HWinfo was looking blurry, 70W was the GPU 😛

But when i see almost 1.5V on the CPU, i guess PBO is going optimistic.

Any way to lower that while not causing the performance to go down?

And did anything else seem weird to you?

I never tweaked an AMD processor personally so i can't talk from experience. But undervolting them has been a very common way to deal with the problem, sometimes with better performance actually.

Maybe others can share on that, otherwise if you look on youtube it's been discussed left and right by every tech channel in existence.

I'll look into it. Should i also post a screenshot of my taskmanagers? Or lets just say a video because i wont get everyhing on one screenshot,

Remember that environment has more of an impact than anything else at idle. Even if a program is keeping your cpu active (common with AMD), the actual watts from the cpu should be relatively low. 40W at the cpu is not going to have much impact on coolant temp at any fan speed above zero rpm. The internal case temp and the water temp are usually the same in this state. 
 

The large rise when gaming is surely because you are pulling gpu waste heat through the cpu radiator. You can try experimenting with fixed speeds while gaming to see if lower fan speeds help keep coolant temp lower and thus cpu temp too.  You’d prefer the gpu waste heat left via the rear exhaust rather than through the radiator heating the water as it passes through.
 

Most likely the +2-3C increase while browsing/video is from general system heat (RAM, VRM, etc) going out the top but that is the one that grabbed my attention. It would be normal to see that coolant slowly drift up 2-3C over 30 min plus as the the entire case continues to warm after cold boot. However, if the pc has been on for hours and then liquid temp suddenly goes up 2-3C because you are watching YouTube that makes me curious. I would get HWinfo up at the same time do you can see some cpu power numbers. Make sure you disable monitoring of the AIO and Commander Core in HWinfo do they don’t get entangled polling at the same time.  Use CUE for coolant temp. HWinfo for the detailed cpu data. On the other hand, if you are using zero rpm fan mode or something super low like 300-400 rpm then I think +2-3C is expected.

My fans are always running higher than 400 rpm. I've set the lcd screen to showcase the liquid temp on it. Im just curious because those temps still feel a little bit high for not gaming. Especially when considering that i don't have iCue running in the background. With iCue my coolant temps would even be higher.
