2x Commander XT for H150i Elite LCD XT and 10x AF120 RGB Elite Fans

I am just seeking some advice after reading about potential USB issues with a combination I would like to try.

I currently have a Commander XT left from an old build. I am in the process of purchasing the parts for a new build with the H150i Elite LCD XT that comes with a further Commander XT. I want to accompany this build with 7 further AF120 RGB Elite fans totalling 10. I have a Z790 motherboard with 4x USB 2.0 headers and 2x USB 3.2 A headers. Would this work or would it encounter issues?

Thank you.

The Elite LCD XT will come with a Commander Core, which looks similar to the Commander XT but has a very vital role for the AIO.  Pump power and control is routed through that controller.  That also means both devices will appear as separate entries in CUE which is also useful

Unlike the Z690 series, we have not been seeing too many issues with USB detection on Z790.   You will need at least 2 USB 2.0 9 pin internal headers.  Are you sure your board has 4 USB 2.0 connections?  Often makers will count "2 ports per connection" but that does not mean you can connect two devices.  Typically it is just two ports and using a "USB splitter" is where things can become difficult.  The LCD top has it's own splitter to share with the Commander Core, so if there are no other USB 2 devices you may be able to get away with using just 2 connections on the board and not need the usual powered USB hub.

Hi c-attack, thank you for your message.

You are right, I have reviewed the board more closely (MSI MAG Z790 TOMAHAWK) and it is 2 USB 2.0 connections. I do not believe I will be using either of them for anything else, so both would be free. So you think the Commander Core (that comes with Elite LCD XT) and the additional Commander XT can be in separate internal headers? I can use the Commander Core to control the LCD/4 fans, and the Commander XT to control the remaining 6 fans?

The motherboard also has a USB 3.2 Gen 1 & Gen 2, of which I believe I will only be using the latter for my cases Type-C front panel.

I think you are going to be fine using the Com Core paired with the LCD top splitter on one port and the Com XT on the other. Most Z790 appear to have remedied the compromises made on Z690 went they first introduced pci-e 4. What you can’t do is piggy back the Commander Core onto the Com XT “usb passthrough”. Those passthrough ports typically work for simple devices and neither the Com Core or LCD top fit that description.

If there is an issue, using a usb 3->2 conversion cable is an option to create another path. Most users wind up needing a powered usb 2 hub when going beyond two devices.
