Last year sometime, I bought the above system from scan.co.uk, and I've had stability issues from day 1. I've ignored it up until now because I'm too lazy to have been bothered to source out the root of the problem until I ended up losing some valuable data because of random BSODs. I've tried numerous system re-installs, just about every driver config under the sun, BIOS settings, enabling and disabling just about everything that would still allow the system to boot, and then, I came to the RAM...

In short, I downloaded memtest tonight, checked my twinx and got errors. One stick consistently gives errors, the other does not, and I also get errors in dual channel, which I'd expect if one is bustified.

I've tried memtesting it on another machine with the same results, and also tested some alternate ram in the machine above just to make sure it isnt one of the memory related systems on the chip/ mb. They tested ok.

After getting in touch with scan, they told me they prefer to let manufacturers deal with manufacturer warranties, so here I am :p

Acknowledgement that I can start the RMA process would be grand unless you can think of something else for me to try :p

Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and I would set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts if you have not done so. If you do find one failing then lets get it or them replaced. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

However; if you get errors with both modules, that would suggest some other problem. And I would try testing the memory in another system to be sure.

Voltage is already at 2.8 because its the closest my BIOS will go to the recommended 2.75.

I checked the sticks together initially, then separately but in the same slot. One gives errors the other doesnt. I've reproduced this on a second machine too.

Could you clarify a couple of things the "I think I have a bard part!" page doesnt mention for me please?

  • What sort of packaging is expected (i.e. padded envelope or box)?
  • Is there a returns centre for the UK, or is the USA address the only one?
  • Because it is a TwinX set, do you want both modules back, or do you just want the faulty module to replace with another?

If you could take the time to answer these questions (maybe add them to the list of questions in the "I think I have a bad part" page?) I would be most appreciative.

Thanks very much

1. What sort of packaging is expected (i.e. padded envelope or box)?

A: Just use the package that your modules came in, if you don’t have that, please just use an Antistatic bag and a small box to protect them.

2. Is there a returns centre for the UK, or is the USA address the only one?

A: Please try your reseller first, and if they will not help you then please contact our Customer Service.

3. Because it is a Twinx set, do you want both modules back, or do you just want the faulty module to replace with another?

A: Yes you should submit the RMA for 1-Twinx set and send both modules. Other wise you would not have a matched set.
