solaa21
Hi everyone, big problems with my Aopen 915GMn-HFS (Pentium M Dothan) It's been randomly locking in XP, using media player or starting any game will definately lock it, with static sound and corrupted screen. Tried all the normal things (no overclock), re-installed XP etc, not using pci-e or pci cards. Finally removed one stick of Corsair 512mb DDR2-4300 3-3-3-8 and the system is stable.... DOS memory tester reported no problems. Any comments, suggestions? Is my memory controller screwed? Can someone suggest a really agressive memory tester? Is this Corsair stuff faulty? Many thanks
Yellowbeard
It could be a power supply or voltage issue. What PSU do you have and what is your RAM voltage? Mike.
solaa21
Hi, I use an Antec Phanton 350w PSU, RAM voltage is bios default 1.8v Let me know what else you need to know before I RMA these modules. It could be a power supply or voltage issue. What PSU do you have and what is your RAM voltage? Mike.
Yellowbeard
I see several potential problems. Your power supply looks to be a bit small. Also, is it an ATX 2.0 compliant PSU and does it have a 20 pin or 24 pin plug? I don't think the RAM is the issue here since it works properly with 1 stick removed. That's why I would investigate the PSU. Also, can you list the exact part number and all of the info on the holographic stickers from each module? You can try 1.9v or 2.0v on the RAM. If the power supply is not the issue, your RAM voltage could simply be too low. This could explain why it runs with 1 stick but not 2. Mike. solaa21
Hi Mike, my system is very similar to the one reviewed at SilentPC review: http://www.silentpcreview.com/article248-page5.html Note, how LOW the power consumption is, also i have NO video card so my system is probably using only 50watts. Note they use very expensive OCZ PC2-4200 Performance RAM, which requires more than the standard 1.8v, 2.0volts I think. Note, that system costs $3700, so I believe to be well testedm again using the same PSU as I am. This is an atx 2.0 compliant PSU with a 24 pin connector, I am using the supplied converter for my MB. Lastly, the PSU was powering a 2.8ghz P4 with 1gb of DDR1 with no problems. No holographic sticker (purchased from a well known UK online shop) cm2x512a-4300c3 xms4303v1.1 scil-906408809 Many thanks for the continued help. I see several potential problems. Yellowbeard
Sounds like quiet and efficient setup. My guess is back to the RAM voltage again. I'd try 1.9v or 2.0v on the RAM which is safe and within warranty spex. If your memory test did not find any issue with the RAM, you may need to contact the MOBO maker and see if there is a bios update they may have. Also, do you have a way to test the RAM or CPU in another working system? A buddy or a shop may be able to help. Mike.
solaa21
Hi Mike, unfortunately, no BIOS vRAM settings available and I dont have a friend to test out on. Going to RMA the RAM and try some different stuff, a second test with memtest revealed no faults again. Sounds like quiet and efficient setup. My guess is back to the RAM voltage again. solaa21
Hi, after replacing the Corsair ram with Crucial ballistix 4-4-4-12 the system is stable in dual channel mode. I imagine it was lack of voltage to to the Corsair dimms, but this MB does not allow vdim yet, i hope a bios upgrade will allow me to use high performance ram in the future
