iCUE 4.20.169 update from 4.17.244 Locks My Computer During Install

Recommended Posts

I updated my working installation (4.17.244) with the downloaded 4.20.169 update. During install the update first removes my existing iCUE  (normal) then proceeds to install the newer version. After about 70% my computer is locked solid. No response from the mouse, keyboard or disc activity. Reset via the power button to get back to a working Windows 11 Pro. I tried to re-install the earlier version on iCUE and the install locked up at more or less the same spot in the install. Fortunately, I had a backup from a few days ago so I just restored the system. Unfortunately, I wasted a couple hours waiting for the restore to complete.

I have a ASUS Prime Z270A motherboard with 32GB DD4 memory. My main drive is a Samsung SSD-970 M.2 module. I have two keyboards - a CORSAIR STRAFE RGB MK.2 and a Logitec wireless keyboard/mouse combo. I also have a Kensington Expert Mouse Pro and a Wacom Intous Pen Tablet. The pen tablet is connected to the USB passthrough on the MK.2 keyboard (though there is no reason that this would affect anything). I'm running Windows Pro 64-bit build 22000.438. My graphics card is a EVGA GTX 1060 3GB running four monitors.

It is extremely rare to run across a program that can lock up a Windows 11 system so completely (believe me, with the sheer volume of programming tools, media editing software (audio and visual) that I have installed on this system it should have locked up at least once in the past two years). My current system is a fresh install from scratch, as the older system was bloated and slow. I had no trouble installing Version 4 iCUE software when it was first released, and was pleased to see the improvements. The update, however, has problems.
