How different are different revisions of memory?

Hi, hope you can help...

So, I bought a stick of CMX512-3200C2 rev. 1.1 & used it in my Athlon board.

Then when I got an A64 board, I thought I'll buy another at the same time. This time I got a rev 1.2.

The new motherboard is misbehaving and crashing all the time in the week I have had it. I'm trying to rma it and all Epox keep saying is that the memory is causing the instability:

Can you please confirm that the memory that you are using appears at

http://www.amd.com/us-en/assets/content_type/DownloadableAssets/Athlon_64_Unbuffered_DIMM_AVL.pdf

or

Please do not use mixed memory modules in system capable of dual channel

support as you are doing. Please set memory timings for 11-4-4-3 2T for

stable.

No Corsair on that list...

Timings don't seem too good either...

My questions:

1. What actual chips are on each stick or is there an online decoder for their markings?

2. Are these sticks so different that they would really cause instability and crashing on an Epox 9NDA3J with a Winchester 3000+?

3.If so, is there any way of swapping out the old stick so that I can match the new stick?

4. Is the only solution open to me to sell the old stick on eBay and rush back to my supplier hoping he still has stock of that revision of this memory?

BTW I'm hoping for a happy ending here....

:(:

Well I am sorry but you should not mix memory with this platform. If you add to what you have you would need to find an exact match to what you have or had. But it would have been better to find another use for the old module and just purchase a Twinx set of modules. The only thing we can do is try to RMA both modules but you will need to make the request to our customer service to send you 2 modules that match. This is not really a warranty issue.

Please either call our customer service at 888-222-4346 and dial "0" or follow the link in my signature "If you have submitted the RMA using the on line form and have not got a reply!" And send them a detailed email and ask if they can replace both of your modules for a set that match.

1. http://www.houseofhelp.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34307 This info won't tell you the ICs used on the RAM. However, if you list all that info here, RAM GUY can tell you what ICs you have.

2. Mixing different revisions of RAM is usually a BAD idea. Your symptoms are typical.

3. Not up to me, ask RAM GUY or your vendor.

4. Technically, you need to buy a TwinX pair of RAM to be guaranteed of proper operation in a dual channel MOBO. If you buy seperate sticks of RAM from Corsair, you will have the guarantee normal for 1 stick. However, the individual sticks are not guaranteed by Corsair to operate in a dual channel MOBO. There is a 99.9% chance that matched sticks will operate just fine but, Corsair hand tests the TwinX pairs in a MOBO prior to shipping. That's why they make TwinX so they can validate the RAM.

So, it's up to you on how to try to solve it. If you try to match the sticks on your own, you're on your own.

Good luck, Mike.

No problem, and thanks for the compliment. And no worries it’s an easy over site to make. I think we have all done similar things at one time or another, so don’t worry about it. Let’s just try to get the problem resolved. Please let me know when you get the new modules.

They're Here! I have just installed my new Twinx modules.

Everything seems OK right now and I'm a lot happier

They are XMS3202 V2.2 0326079-1 - are they Winbond CH-5?

From what I've been reading here they are...

Anyway, thanks a lot for all your help.

Say a special thanks to Kenny who looked after all the admin
