robcan0630
System Description: Gigabyte GA-K8NS Ultra 939 (nForce 3 Ultra) AMD Athlon 64 3000+ (Socket 939) Corsair TwinX1024 - 3200C2PT Dual-Channel RAM 256MB nVidia GeForce FX 5600 AGP Video Card Seagate 160 GB (7200 / 8MB) Serial ATA HDD Thermaltake Silent PurePower 410 Watt PSU Thermaltake Soprano VB1000BWS Mid-Tower Microsoft Windows XP Professional (SP2) I came home the other day, and my computer screen was black. The monitor was not turned off, but the screen was blank. I tried to reboot but received a blue screen. After several unsuccessful attempts to reboot, I decided that I might be better off to format and reinstall Windows. Once the format was complete, and Windows began copying files, I began receiving a message that the file could not be copied. When I tried to skip that file, I would get the error on the very next file. I pulled the SATA hard drive out and attempted to install on a parallel ATA drive (Western Digital 7200 / 8MB) but received the same problem. I ran memtest and it began counting error as soon as the test started and counted non-stop. I then replaced the SATA hard drive and put in two sticks of single-channel DDR that I had on hand (I do part-time work for a PC repair company). When I started the format and Windows install this time, everything went perfectly fine. Once I had Windows reinstalled, and the drivers loaded for the MoBo, I put the Corsair RAM back in and once again lost the ability to boot into Windows. However, when I put the single-channel RAM back in, everything was fine once again. I really need to get my PC back up and running.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 20, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 20, 2005 Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and I would set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts (+.2Volts) as well. If you do find one failing then lets get it or them replaced. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it! However; if you get errors with both modules, that would suggest some other problem. And I would try testing the memory in another system to be sure. robcan0630
I have tried booting with the sticks one at a time and that would not work either. I still received the Blue Screen and a restart. When I ran memtest on the sticks one at a time, they both returned errors. However, once I placed the old RAM that I have in the system, everything runs fine. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 20, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 20, 2005 That would suggest some other problem, especially if the old memory is a slower speed like PC-2100. But I have no problem replacing your modules if you want to try that. However, I would encourage you to test them in another system to be sure. robcan0630
I have a friend who has an Asus A8N SLI Deluxe w/ Athlon 64 3500+, and I can test it in his system. Do I still need to test at 2.7v, and are there any other bios settings that I will need to change on his system? Thank you.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 20, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 20, 2005 I would just set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts after you load setup defaults and then test with http://www.memtest.org. And you can use this as a reference to set the timings. Dim Voltage 2.7 Volts CAS Latency CL=2.5 Row Cycle Time tRC Bios Default Row Refresh Cyc Time tRFC Bios Default Ras# to CAS# delay tRCD 3 Row to Row delay Bios Default Min Ras# Active Time tRAS 6 Row Precharge Time tRP 3 Write Recovery Time Bios Default Write to Read delay Bios Default Read to Write Delay Bios Default Refresh Period tREF Bios Default
robcan0630
I have tested the RAM in a friend's system at the specs you gave me, and one of the sticks is reporting a massive amount of errors. I believe that in my previous post I said that testing both at home, they both returned errors, and I may have actually tested the same stick twice. However, his system does show that one of the sticks is bad. I retested in my system at home and received the same results, one stick no errors, one stick many errors. I believe that I may have also had issues with my parallel ATA HDD, but I have taken it out. Will I need to return both sticks since they are a matched pair or am I guaranteed to receive an identical stick of RAM if I onely return the bad stick? Thank you for your help. The system will not post in most cases. If your system will support a 800 FSB CPU then you can run DDR400 but only with an 800 FSB CPU. The OEM systems do not let you over clock or manually set the memory timings to over come this limitation. Sorry!
