Many Bad Sectors Confirmed

Recommended Posts

OK, so I was having random crashing, seemingly when i would open several programs at once, and it would just restart the whole computer, memory read error. I ran memtest and it said I have several bad sectors. I can confirm that my motherboard is running at stock speeds, which are well within the parameters of my Corsair XMS 2400 [CM64SD256-2400C2](I have an ABIT KG7-RAID). I can also further confirm that the module is bad because I have 2 identical sticks, and the other has no problem running solo when this bad module is removed, and what's more if I were to switch the slots in which I place the 2 dimms, the machine crashes almost immediately, suggesting that there are bad sectors on only the one stick. I purchased this a long time ago from Spartan Tech (a few years), so I was under the impression I was just out of luck, until I heard that your memory modules have a lifetime warranty, and checked to see that Spartan Tech is an authorized reseller. I have bought new RAM since I determined the dimm was unusable, but having found out about the warranty, would certainly not mind having a bit of extra RAM in the system. (PS, Though I ran memtest several months ago, I believe the RAM failed on something like tests 2 and 5, but am not certain anywhere beyond knowing that it failed several).

If you have more that one module I would suggest you get all of them replaced so they match.

Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

While I do have two identical modules of that RAM, they were purchased at separate times (though both from Spartan Tech), and are not part of a purchased pair. There appears to be nothing wrong with the second module so I don't know how Corsair would have reason to replace it. So I'm not quite sure what you meant by that, could you please specify?

In otherwords, they can't guarantee that the new stick (which probably won't be a 2400 stick, more likely 2700 or 3200) will work with it, so to ensure that they will work together, they're recommending that you send in both sticks to ensure that the replacement sticks will work together.

Wired is correct,

This module is no longer inproduction and we will replace them with another part# so that they match I would submit both modules for RMA.

Ok, thanks for the advice, I'll try to RMA both ASAP

Well, I got my 2 2700 sticks today (tho they are nowhere near identical being version 1.4 and 3.2 or something of the sort), and put them in behind the 512MB stick of 2700 I had already, only to find that windows would not start up. So, I tried reseating the RAM several times, even though my motherboard (KG7-RAID) was detecting the full GB of RAM just fine, just because this particular MOBO is known to have picky slots. This does not help, though windows manages to startup for about 5 seconds before restarting itself. Then I tried upping the voltage, also to no avail. So, I put the memory timings all back to auto (even though they had been working just fine with RAM of supposedly lower quality (PNY)), this still did not work. Finally I put the main timing from CAS 2 to CAS 2.5, and now everything seems to be running fairly stably having been up for about 5 mins. This is disappointing as it says right on the sticker on the RAM that it is rated for CAS 2, and whats more rated to run at this speed with a front side bus of 333, where i am only running it at FSB of 272. So, I'm not sure exactly what is wrong since my old 2400 XMS could run the speed just fine as well, but at least it detects the fulll amount of RAM in windows, even if it is running slightly slower speeds than it had been stable at before. Thanks for honoring the lifetime warranty policy in such a timely fashion, at least this aspect of the ordeal was not a hassle =)

With this module and MB when you have all 3 slots filled they do suggest running the memory at DDR266, and since XMS2400 has its SPD set to PC-2100 JEDEC spec is most likely the reason they were working previously. I would suggest you set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts and set the timings to Cass 2.5-3-3-7 and test the modules with http://www.memtest.org to make sure the system is stable.

Assuming the 2.5-3-3-7 corresponds to timings for CAS Latency-Trcd Timing Value-Trp Timing Value-TRC Timing Value, then I set all the values as you suggested, and passed the full spectrum of the MEMTEST86+ tests, with no errors, thank you for your help =)
