Alien_Warlock
my RAM modules are a set of TWINX modules labled CMX512-3200XL v1.2 lot# 0448010-2 motherboard MSI K8N Neo (ms-7025) CPU AMD Athlon64 3500+ my problem is that memtest shows errors in test #5 . The errors only occur in "dual channel mode". Running either of the RAM modules alone does not produce any errors. The errors also only occur under the following conditions: 1. The memory clock is set to run at 200MHz. Keeping the RAM frequency at 166MHz or slower does not yield any errors. and..... 2. The CPU L2 cache is enabled. Disabling the L2 cache (external cache) does not produce any errors. Enabling or disabling the L1 cahe (internal cache) has no effect. and...... 3. Row Precharge Time (Trp) is set at 2. Setting Trp at 3 or higher will eliminate the errors. All the other memory latency settings have no effect . The errant settings are all default and obviously not acceptable remedies. I'v also tried setting the memory voltage at 2.75v and also disabled anything having to do with USB. The bad memory error addresses shown in the error report vary (I'm aware that the addresses are not the exact address under test #5) but are also consisitent in that the same dozen bad memory addresses show up. If I move the RAM modules from slots 1 and 2 to slots 3 and 4, the error reports do not appear to differ at all. However, if I reverse the RAM modules (the module that was in slot 1 is moved to slot 2 and the module that was in slot 2 is moved to slot 1) The errors occur in completely different addresses thatn when the RAM modules were in the opposite channels. If I now move the modules form slots 1 and 2 to slots 3 and 4 (slot 1 module to slot 3 and slot 2 moved to slot 4) the memory errors will be consistent to the previous situation. I hope that isn;t sounding too confusing. but what I'm getting at is that the memory error report is different when the RAM modules are installed in the opposite channels. Thes RAM modules do not produce any memory test errors when installed on my other mobo (K8N Neo Fsr) but that mobo does not support dual channel. My other set of RAM (VS1GBKIT400) I do not get any errors but that set of RAM does not use the low latency settings of my XMS modules. WHere do I go from here? I may be able to "borrow" another set of RAM modules to help determine the exact problem but obtaining another mobo or CPU is pretty much out of the question . thx for any help anyone can provide. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 5, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 5, 2005 No I would RMA the CPU based on what you have posted!
Alien_Warlock
Well after reading through some of the other threads I decided to rerun memtest with the individual RAM modules ( I had only run a about a dozen or two passes testing the individual modules)... one RAM module produced produced errors similar to the errors while running both RAM modules in the dual channel mobo (K8N Neo2 Platinum)... I then tested the same RAM module in my single channel mobo (K8N Neo Fsr) The tests resulted in errors this time but less frequent than in the dual channel mobo. I then tested the other RAM module in the Neo2 Platinum and it produced errors also but not until pass #149 then again at pass #221 and again at pass #377 I stopped the tests after 400+ passes...I then tested this RAM module in the Neo Fsr and it only produced errirs at pass #275 and more than 750 passes were run on that test. All the testing mentioned in this reply were test #5 (with stock settings in the bios) only since that's the test that had been producing errors. I am currently testing my other pair of RAM (VS1GBKIT400) in the Neo2 Platinum with test #5 and it is still error free after 315 passes. It's beginning to appear to me that my TwinX pair of RAM may be bad. Any opions or suggestions are very much apreciated and my apologies for my initial thread sounding so confusing. P.S. The Neo2 Platinum has an Athlon64 3500+ (939 pin) and the Neo Fsr has an Athlon64 3200+ (754 pin) both CPU's are clocked at 2210 GHz
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 6, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 6, 2005 Please tell me the bios settings you had set with the XMS3200XL modules.

Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 6, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 6, 2005 Please set the Dim Voltage to 2.8 Volts and test the modules one at a time and if you still get errors with both modules I would as I said before RMA the CPU. Or if you can test the modules in another system that might help isolate your system.
Alien_Warlock
I did test the 3200XL modules in another system.. the system with the MSI K8N Neo Fsr motherboard with AMD Athlon64 3200+ CPU .. in my initial post I had stated taht I didn't get any errors in that system which led me to believe that the problem was a dual channel problem. I reran the tests again (since I only ran a dozen passes initiall)y... errors were produced during the second test runs. One RAM stick produced errors in many of the test passes . The other RAM stick was error free except for one pass out of over 750 passes run with test #5. (the errors occured only during pass #275).... I probably need to rerun some of the test I stated in the intial post (L2 cache diabled etc.) since I only ran about 2 dozen passes with test #5 . I may had not given the tests a chance to produce any errors. I plan on going ot the computer store later today and I'll pick up another set of RAM if they have them in stock. The store ahs a great return policy I can just buy them then the new RAM then return them. :D:
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 6, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 6, 2005 Alien_Warlock Based on what you just posted and what was previously posted that would still suggest a power problem or the memory controller in the CPU is failing and the CPU is the most likely suspect. I don’t know how I can make it any more clear.
Alien_Warlock
I'll take your word that the problem is the CPU You obviously have a wealth of knowledge and experience with diagnosing computer memory. :): I have one more question though. Since the same RAM sticks are causing memtest86+ errors in my other system (athlon64 3200+ , K8N Neo Fsr ) ... would that mean I have two systems with a CPU or memory controller problem?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted May 9, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted May 9, 2005 I would need a break down each system and the exact settings you had set and the errors that you got on what test. But as I think I said I have no problem replacing the modules. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!
