Memtest Issues Cant Check RAM

Recommended Posts

Hey there, alright someone ppplleeeaassee help me out...I follow the instructions to make a bootable floppy for Memtest and it tells me the following:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Anyone have a clue why this is happening? I even tried to make a bootable CD with the image file and that locked up??

Basically, my issues are continuous lockups during game play. Have had a couple blue screens, but mostly just freezing of the game...and then it will start back up. (Games such as Desert Combat, Half Lift 2, Doom 3, etc)

My system consist of:

Gigabyte GA-K8NSNXP nForce 3 250 MB

Koolance Water Cooled Case

Antec 550W Power Supply

PNY Geforce 6800 Ultra 250meg Video Card

AMD 64 3200+ Anthlon 64 Processor

1 gig TwinX1024-3200C2PT Corsair RAM

2 WD Raptor Drives running in RAID formation

Thank you everyone, your help is appreciated, this is driving me nuts!!! Does anyone have an idea what the issue could be??

Alright, some more information. I went ahead and removed one of the sticks...Games do not lock up, however, run a tad slow. Figured then the other stick was bad. Removed the one and installed the other, still worked alright.

So, alone they work alright, together they do not work correctly. Any thoughts??

Thanks!

Mike that would suggest some other problem, and is this a socket 754 or socket 939 system? If its socket 754 please try and set the Dim Over Voltage Contol to +.2 Volts and install the modules in slots 2-3 or 1-3 and test the system again. If its a socket 939 please try and set the Dim Over Voltage Contol to +.2 Volts.

Thank you for the response. The board is a socket 754, I changed the Dim Over Voltage as requested as well as install the modules as shown. Still the same result...game continues to lockup. Any other thoughts??

Thank you!

You can't run Memtest from within Windows. With your computer turned off. put the previously prepared floppy disk with Memtest86 on it into the floppy drive. Start your computer. When it asks you if you want to get into the bios, do so and change the boot order to look at the floppy drive/removable drive first. Save changes and exit the bios. Your system will reboot and then look for an operating system on your floppy drive. The copy of Memtest86 on the floppy will then load and start to run multiple tests. Let Memtest86 run for three passes to see if it finds any errors. (One of the entries states what pass it's on.) Report the findings in your post. Good luck.

Right I understand that, however, you create the boot disk from within windows...there lies the problem :) it does not work??

Please use http://www.memtest.org and test the modules one at a time. And locking up in a game could be anything. And did you install the AMD 64 CPU Driver?

Hi there, yes the AMD driver is installed. I would love to run Memtest, however, as I stated in my first post, I am getting an error when trying to make the boot disk. It is odd.

Thanks for the time everyone!

Please read thru What is memtest86+, what do I use it for? That may help you fidure it out. And can you tell me the error you get?

Hi there, yes I did read that information, that is where I found the link. When attempting to launch the BAT file I receive this error:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\cmd.exe

C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\AUTOEXEC.NT. The system file is not suitable for running MS-DOS and Microsoft Windows applications. Choose 'Close' to terminate the application.

Thanks for the help!

PS: Memtest86 is not an MS-DOS based program and can not be launched from an ms-dos prompt from within Xp.

PS2: When formatting the floppy make sure that it is a fat32 format. Xp has no option to make a NTFS file system startup disk.

You are using the wrong version of memtest if you run it over Dos.

http://www.memtest.org will make a linux bootable floppy.

Please see Where to get Memtest and how to download it?

Allright I edited my post eliminating those directions. I was just thinking of workarounds. I did notice something else though. If Extremeoff-road didn't use your provided links and went to the Memtest site directly, he may have downloaded the Linux version that is not installable in Windows and Dos operating systems. The site lists two versions. A linux only version and a version that is installable from Windows, Pre-compiled Memtest86v3.2 installable from Windows and DOS.
