Bad memory stick twinx 2 x 512

Hi

A few days ago my computer went haywire. It would boot till the start of windows XP then start rebooting again, kind of stuck in a loop. I said what the heck I was due for a it anyways so I have decided to reinstall windows.

Every thing went fine with the formating and such but I was unable to complete the installation, I always got a message saying that such or such file couldn't be found or was missing. I tried to intall it from another windows xp CD since I have a couple of copies(all legit). It didn't work and I got the same messages.

I took my computer where I bought it. The tech there ran a memory test and apparently it showed an error, I don't know which one or code he did not tell me. Further more, he installed windows with my old memories sticks (2x256 corsair as well) and also indepentenly with my newer sticks. He was not able to install windows with my newer sticks but it went just fine with my older sticks. Currently my computer runs with my older memory stick

What I don't understand is that I ran my computer for a good many months using all the memory sticks and never had a problem.

Spec of the none working sticks :

VS1GBKIT400 Lot 0452045-0

P-4 2.8 Ghz

Asus P4P-800 Deluxe

I am running the default setup. I only changed the boot sequence so the floppy is disabled and I also turned off the onboard audio device.

Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and I would set the Dim Voltage to 2.75 Volts and disable legacy USB when running the memory test. If you do find one is failing, please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

Ok I have changed the setup for the Legacy USB but where can I change the Dim Voltage ? Is this a BIOS setup because I did not see anything that looks like it in my BIOS.

Nevertheless, I have ran Memtest on each indiviual stick. My 2 original sticks did not produce any errors but my 2 newer sticks did, both of them.

Ok I will try that and btw the number they are asking for on the form to get a RMA is appearing in the right corner right ? 18??? It's a bit confusing since on the form they say in the top left corner and in the instruction they say in the top right corner.

Ok with your recommended setup the results were :

Both twin X modules showed errors, screen is red with them.

As for my older sticks, that's funny because the test stopped by itself but no errors was dectected. The same happened for both of them. The pass stopped at around 70%-80% for both of them. This did not happen when I tested them with the voltage unchanged and the settings in Auto mode.

I would encourage you to try if you can, but I have no problem replacing the module if you want to try that.

Should I change the settings as you recommended even if it's on another MB. I will probably test the modules at the office on another computer but I dont know the brand of the MB, the computer is brand name.

As you guessed, I was not able to change the settings on the MB at the office. What can be changed in those bios is next to nothing.

What I did is a brought back the modules to the store I bought it from and asked if the modules could be tested on some other machines. I explained in length the setup you had given me so we would be sure under what conditions the tests would take place. I know they did not test it on a machine with the same MB as the one I have but they said there was no errors.

They let my machine run for a couple of days without finding any errors but I soon discovered that the tests were not made with your suggested setup. Anyways I went back home with my machine but I couldn't start it. The problem was the same, the booting sequence stopped just after windows came on and the booting sequence restarted again.

I have retested each module myself with the proper setup and again found the twin x to be deffective. When I took them out of my machine I was able to get a full boot and a working computer.

There is more to this, I have noticed that for no apparent reason and all of the sudden, when I looked in my configuration panel/systeme in windows, my computer is considered to be a multi processors machine which is not the case. When I looked up in my bios, I could see that only one processor was accounted for. I even flashed my bios with a newer version but it did not do any good. This is getting really strange. I smell something very fishy here.........The worst part it that this MB can't get more than one processor.

I think I might try to get a new MB of the same model or its replacement and see from there what happens. As it is now, it's kind of hard for me to say if the modules are really bad or if my MB is freaking out or both for that matter......... I might also try to get some help from the Asus guys.

What is puzzleing is that my computer seems to be working fine and dandy as it is

I will keep you posted on my progress / regress

Ok here's some updates.

I changed my MoBo for an Asus P4P800 SE. that was the closest I could get my hands on in the shortest periode of time. In fact they are almost identical save for a few things.

I have have tested all the memory module with the standard procedure. None shown any errors so it greatly suggest that the MoBo was the problem.

Should the setup suggested for testing the module be left as a normal daily running setup or should I just switch back to my standard unajusted setup ?
