Issues with CMX512-3200C2PT (lockup & freeze)

Recommended Posts

I need help. I just bought a single Corsair XMS 512MB DDR400 PC3200 memory and I've been having a problem which is getting difficult to solve.

I have the following PC:

Abit NF7 v2.0

AMD XP 2400+

ATI Radeon 9800PRO 128MB/256bits

and the new memory CMX512-3200C2PT

I've set my processor multiplier to 200 x 10 manually (because my bios default was 133 x 15), set the memory timings to OPTIMAL (3-3-3-8) and change the default DIMM voltage to 2.7V.

When I attempt to play a game the computer simply freeze after some time (and the sound keeps on an endless loop). Depending on the game, it takes more time to freeze than the usual.

For instance:

Hitman: Contracts

I've played this game for 20 seconds then the computer locked up.

Heroes of Might & Magic IV

I've played for 1 hour and then the computer locked up.

Street Racing Syndicate

I've played for 5 seconds then the computer locked up.

I've tried with multiple configurations. 400MHz with 2-3-3-6 and 2.7V... 400MHz with 2-3-3-6 and 2.9V... lots of different combinations.

When I set it to default 400MHz / 3-3-3-8 / 2.6V the computer takes a while to freeze. When I set it to 2.7V the computer freezes faster.

When I run with 333MHz / 2-3-3-6 / 2.7V the computer doesn't freeze. NEVER! But I'm not getting the best performance with 333MHz :-(

I don't know what to do anymore. I have all the updated drivers. I have the latest BIOS. I used that memtest program to test my memory and got NO ERRORS (twice).

A friend of mine told me that the temperature may be causing those issues.

I've checked the processor and chipset temperatures and it's normal (33ºC mobo / 47ºC processor). I don't know about the memory temperature.

Can you help me? Do you think my motherboard can't handle the memory?

I run Windows XP and with 400MHz the computer is working well. It only happens when I try to play a heavy game.

What should I do!? :-(

Please put the memory modules on either slots 1&3 or 2&3; make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed for your MB; load optimized/set up default, and set the following BIOS settings;

TwinX512 or TwinX1024-3200C2

Softmenu SetUp

CPU Operating Speed: User Define

External Clock: 133/66/33

Memory Clock: 166/2:3/125%

CPU/Memory ratio: 2:3

CPU Voltage: Normal/Auto

DDR SDRAM Voltage: 2.7/2.75 Volts

AGP VDDQ Voltage: Default *unless you have ATI (9200 or 9600) or NVIDIA (5200 or 5700) then 1.6 Volts suggested!*

Advanced Chipset/DRAM Configuration:

DRAM Timing Selectable: User Define

DRAM Clock: DDR333

Cas Latency Time: 2.5T

RAS# to CAS Delay (tRCD): 3T

Min. RAS# Active Time (tRAS): 6T

RAS# Precharge Time (tRP): 3T

All other settings should be set to default settings!

Then please test them one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and let’s make sure it's not some other issue! I would run the test for at least 2-3 passes to be sure!
