Cmxsd512-2700ll

hello

i have purchased in newegg two Corsair CMXSD512-2700 modules and two IBM T42 2378FVU thinkpads.

i installed the two 256mb original modules in one machine and the the two CMXSD512-2700 modules in the second.

the machine with the corsair memory if left working during the nigth will be either frozen or blue screened by morning, occasionaly it will hang during work as well.

the RAM runs at 333DDR while on windows xp (according to CPUZ) but will run at 266DDR when i run memtest (in DOS), i have no option of changing latencies on the BIOS, so it runs on SPD. i was about to ask IBM to test the machine (after running all these test on a pure, newly installed windows copy), btu wanted to ask here what are the odds on IBM claiming its a problem with the RAM and what do i do in this case.

it will run memtest for half a day without mistakes, but then again it will run 266DDR on memtest, so.... i guess it doesnt really count.

please advise.

Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and lets make sure one is not failing. And I would check with IBM to make sure that you have the latest bios as well.

i tested with memtest+ 1.55.1 for a whole day and got no errors, HOWEVER, memtest+ shows a memory clock speed of 264DDR which is quite diffrent then the 333DDR shown on windows by CPUZ, i suppose frequencies are tuned by the chipset like the CPU is with SpeedStep, so unless its a bug in memtest+ i cant really test it at 333DDR.

i am using the latest BIOS.

the only method i have for testing the situation right now is leaving the machine on all night which (on most cases) ends up in a blue screen by morning. i dont really work on that machine in the last few days because it keeps crashing, but before, it was crashing while i was using it as well (at the maximum, 5 times a day).

anyway i am testing them one at a time now (i guess i will knwo by tomorrow).

errors on the blue screen were irrilated, some times concerning PAGE errors and others IRQ addresses (dont really remember i can write them down if it helps) and some times just freezez or unscpecified blue screens. didnt notice any heating problem either, certainly smells like RAM problems, even though i have great faith in corsair products (i use 3200XL on the desktop and they work super).

just trying to save the trip to IBM service center by checking all the alteratives first.

any way to make memtest run them at 333DDR?

thanks.

Your system may not be able to run these modules, but I would call IBM and ask if they have a newer bios that you can try. And please test the modules one at a time and see if they dont run at DDR333. Short of that the best I could suggest is to try replacing your modules.

Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

tried them one at a time and in both cases the system hangs after a few hours.

is it possible to replace them with a pair of system select CMSS512MB-333SOD which are claimed to be certefied to run on this machine, i would have taken them to begin with, given i care less about low latency then about stability but they were unavailable at newegg at the time.

i might also add that i am currently in israel though i bought the laptop and the RAM in the USA.

oh, memtest still shows 264DDR in DOS, while CPUZ 333DDR on windows, even when only one is installed.

We can certainly ask customer service, they would be the ones to O.K. that request. Please either call our customer service at 888-222-4346 and dial "0" or follow the link in my signature "If you have submitted the RMA using the on line form and have not got a reply!"

i will have the original memory chip i got the laptop with on the weekend and ill see ifthe problem presists iwth it. this way i know if its the memory or somethign else in the laptop.

will inform.

i will wait with the RMA request untill i preform this last test.

O.K. no problem, please let us know!

"I am sorry but I can only exchange the memory for the same type of RAM

that you send us (the same part number). Please check with your retail

store and see if they can be of any help for you"

well thats what i got from customer service...

i ran the computer for a whole day on the original (twinmos) memory that came with the thinkpad and it works stable.

so... i guess i am stuck with 260$ worth of the most expansive latop RAM available and a laptop that dont like them,

please advise how to proceed
