VS1GBKIT400 suddenly stopped working.

Around 26 January, 2005, I purchased memory of the following description from Newegg.

DDR CRSR 512MB X2 KIT|VS1GBKIT400 *

(Serial#: 0BZSBK040000BFN)

Yesterday, 28-Mar-2005, I got back from an Easter party to find that several applications were indicating that they'd failed and were being shut down by Windows XP Pro. I sent in a few application reports before the OS bluescreened on me. Restarting brought up another failure, so I enabled the switches in the BIOS to make it do all of the start-up tests and display them, and received a failure to Read/Write RAM. This time, the OS booted up, but the BIOS and the OS were only detecting 256 MB of RAM. I downloaded and burned the latest copy of Memtest86, Version 3.2, and ran it. Going by what the BIOS was reporting, 256 MB, I passed all 9 tests without errors. Running it using the probing method, where it detects the actual size of physical memory, I failed most of the tests for everything above 256 MB, seemingly always with an error mask of 00020000. If I understood the test right, when it tried to read/write FFFDFFFF, it would instead get FFFFFFFF. Because the error happened suddenly after two months of usage, incompatibility with the motherboard, a Soltek 865PE, seems unlikely, although I guess one cannot rule it out. Because it was late last night when I got home, I only checked for smoke or burning before shutting off the machine, intending to try re-seating the modules and getting serial numbers in the morning. Unfortunately, I awoke to a power outage which was still going on when I left for work. I will attempt to get this information when I get home from work.

*wry grin* I wish I'd thought to see that you guys have the lifetime warranty on RAM. I spent an additional $11 getting the extended Newegg warranty on the RAM. Anyhow, I look forward to your response.

Please test the modules one at a time with http://www.memtest.org and I would set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts as well. If you do find one failing then lets get it or them replaced. Please follow the link in my signature “I think I have a bad part!” and we will be happy to replace them or it!

However, if you get errors with both modules that would suggest some other problem, and I would try testing the memory in another system to be sure.

Ok. It looks like there's just one bad module. Per your instructions, I've first contacted the re-seller, Newegg, and requested an RMA, which was automatically granted. *wry grin* I'll have to send in both sticks, as that's how their order is listed, but I guess I'll manage without a working computer for a week or so. :[pouts:
