Ryoma
I've gotten the blue screen of death more than a few times now and after checking with memtest, its already found 34 errors @ 117% coverage, running approximately 25 minutes. Does this qualify as bad ram and should be replaced?
Wired
What CPU / FSB / Motherboard do you have?
Ryoma
I am running a: P4 3.0E 800mhz FSB P4P800 SE
Ryoma
To further clarify, those results were at an overclocked FSB of 220mhz. I have since then tested the ram on stock settings of 200mhz FSB. At 353%, 10 errors have been reported. HCI Design's FAQ states that 10 errors @ 300% is considered bad RAM. My 2 sticks of ram were purchased at NCIX, listed as one of Corsair's storefronts.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 28, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 28, 2005 Can you tell me our modules part# (How To Read the Memory Label) and the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?
Ryoma
Can you tell me our modules part# (How To Read the Memory Label) and the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set? I am running two sticks of VS512MB400 in Dual Channel mode. These are run on an Asus P4P800 SE motherboard with a P4 3.0E processor. The first time I found errors through memtest my CPU was set at 3.3ghz (220mhz FSB) at 1:1 (ram ratio set at 400mhz). Further settings include: Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 RAM memory timings were set on auto and read 2.5-4-4-8 through cpu-z. I then changed my cpu and fsb settings to stock (200mhz), and changed all performance settings back to default (resetting the RTC). On these settings, it finds 10 errors at 353% coverage and fails prime95's Blend test in under 25 minutes each and every time (I've run it 3 times). Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 29, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 29, 2005 Please use http://www.memtest.org to test the modules and test them one at a time with Memtest and I would set the Dim Voltage to 2.75 Volts and disable legacy USB as well. Ryoma
I have downloaded memtest86 and run it under a number of times. The results are as follows (at least 3 passes run): 2x512mb dual-chan 245mhz FSB @ 5:4 divider (196mhz) Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested ->5-7 errors each pass 2x512mb dual-chan 200mhz FSB @ 1:1 divider Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: auto USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested ->Approx. the same amount of errors Separate module tests: 1x512mb (first stick) 200mhz FSB @ 1:1 divider Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested -> ZERO errors 1x512mb (second stick) 200mhz FSB @ 1:1 divider Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested -> ZERO errors These results seemed to show that errors only come up running them together. I then switched the RAM to the other two slots on the motherboard. 2x512mb dual-chan 200mhz FSB @ 1:1 divider Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested -> 0 errors after 3 passes 2x512mb dual-chan 245mhz FSB @ 5:4 divider (196mhz) Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested -> 1-2 errors each pass Please advise, I certainly do not want to be running bad ram on my system. If these cannot handle any overclocking, I would want to upgrade to the TWINX1024-4400C25, but would have to sell these off first; I'd want to rma them before doing so. Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 30, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 30, 2005 I would try the latest beta bios for this MB and please make sure you disable PAM or PAT when over clocking. But what you have posted so far would suggest the modules are fine.
Ryoma
That's good news to me; it would be a great hassle having to rma them. If I may ask, what is PAM/PAT exactly? My bios was updated only a few weeks ago, could the difference in errors possibly be the result of a bad slot?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 30, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 30, 2005 PAM or PAT will be listed with the memory timings under Advanced Chipset. And it could be but you would see errors when testing modules one up in that slot. Can you test the modules in another system?

Ram Guy, I am unable to find the PAT/PAM options under any headings of the bios. I tested the ram again under stock speeds again, 200mhz FSB, 3.0ghz, for a longer period of time. After 30 passes, it fails Test #2 once and Test #7 15 times. Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested Unfortunately this is the only system that I have access to which can run this kind of ram :(
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 31, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 31, 2005 Let's try replacing your modules. Ryoma
I RMA'd my ram today at my reseller and tested it right when I got home at stock speeds. After 12 passes it found two errors only, this time both at test 6. Seeing as how these are new modules, is there some other factor that could be giving me these results? The fact that they are not the dual-chan kit? Motherboard?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 1, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 1, 2005 Can you tell me the bios settings you had set for both CPU and memory?
Ryoma
The settings tested were: 200mhz FSB @ 1:1, 3.0ghz Spread Spectrum: Disabled AGP/PCI: 66.6/33.3 USB Legacy: Disabled DimV: 2.75v as suggested Everything else was set on auto and these settings gave me the 2 errors on test 6 after 12 passes. I tested the RAM again, this time with ALL settings under auto, and it yielded similar results, 1 error on test #6 after 7 passes.
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 1, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 1, 2005 Getting random errors like that would normally suggest some other problem, I would try and set the Dim Voltage to 2.85 Volts and see what happens. If you still get these errors I would maybe try testing the modules in another system if you can.
Ryoma
I'll try 2.85v, and test it on a friend's system when I can - I'll let you know what happens. Thanks for all the help! I was also wondering if the errors (very minimal now) could be the result of running 2 sticks of VS512MB400 rather than the VS1GBKIT400. I purchased the two individual modules because together they were priced cheaper than the kit; I figured it would be the same thing?
Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted April 4, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted April 4, 2005 Lets try replacing your modules, but you should see one of the modules failing when testing them one up.
