Help with Value Select BIOS Setting

Need some help please.

Just installed second pair of Value Select 3200 (VS1GBKIT400). I have 2GB total installed now (4 x 512). When I installed the second pair of sticks, the computer wouldn't boot. I reset the BIOS and it started, but the all the timing settings were reset to AUTO and 2T. I noticed the DDR clock was at 166Mhz. I used to run at 200Mhz. Is this normal? I played with the settings a little, but couldn't get it back to 200Mhz. What are the optimum memory settings for this system configuration?

Before installing the second gig of memory, my BIOS Setting were as follows:

Max memclock: 200

Memory timing: 1T

Tcl: 2.5

Trcd: 3

TRas#: 8

TRP: 3

System:

AMD 4000+

MSI K8N Neo2 Ultra

eVGA 6800GT

Any help would be appreciated.

My bad. I did some more research on this forumn and it appears that this is a common limitation of the motherboard. So now my questions are the following:

1) Am I better off performance wise with just 1GB at 400Mhz or with 2GB at 333Mhz?

2) Would I see the same performance limitation on a Twinx 2048-3200 set of sticks with the MSI K8N Neo2?

A: The difference is nominal with this platform, but you can try and set the command rate to 2T and set the memory frequency at DDR400 with the Dim Voltage set to 2.8 Volts and then test the system.

2) Would I see the same performance limitation on a Twinx 2048-3200 set of sticks with the MSI K8N Neo2?

A: No Twinx2048-3200C2 will run at Cass 2.5-3-3-6 1T at 2.7 Volts in this MB.

Thanks for the help. I will try to increase the dim voltage to see if that works to get me back to DDR400.

In your opinion, would I realize significant performance gain by investing in the Twinx2048 sticks or is it also nominal?

With 2 modules you would be able to set the command rate to 1T and that would be about 300-500 Mbs in performance increase so yes, I think it would be noticeable. Is it worth it? That will really depend on your expectations. But I think it would be, especially if you are a gamer, you want the most performance possible.

Thanks for the tip. I raised the dim voltage and the computer was able to boot at DDR400 (2T). Should I change any of the timing settings? They are currently all on Auto.

What program would you suggest to test the system stability under this configuration?
