mrfurion
Hi, I am about to buy a new socket 939 AMD64 3200+ and some ValueSelect PC3200 ram (VS1GBKIT400). I was a bit confused by something on the AMD site, so I just wanted to check - will my RAM will work fine with the CPU I am going to get?
leeghoofd
Normally it should work fine what type of mobo did you have in mind ? Also make sure you update the bios to the latest version. AMD64 are very pickie regarding correct ramsettings ( and prefereably Twinx modules when going Dual channel with socket 939) and good strong PSU's ( 20 amps or more are at the 12 volt rail ! )
mrfurion
Thanks for the reply. I am getting an MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum motherboard, and an Antec case with 350W PSU. Do you think this will work ok?
terryeast
The power supply is a bit weak. You should really try to go bigger, especially with a PCI-e video card. As for the motherboard/ram question you have to have single sided sticks for dual channel operation. The other ram will work, just not in dual channel mode. mrfurion
Ok... are there any motherboards which will run in dual channel mode with DOUBLE SIDED ram sticks? Also, how much more performance does dual channel mode bring? Eg., should I bother spending another $40 on my motherboard to make sure I can run in dual channel mode, or is it only a small increase? Wired
Asus A8V will. I'm running my TwinX1024-3500C2s in dual channel with no problems.
mrfurion
Thanks for the advice, but I need a PCI-E board. PLEASE ADVISE: the following screenshot is from the manual for the ABIT AX8 motherboard. It is based on the VIA K8T890 chipset which supports dual channel and PCI-E. Can someone please confirm for me that the table shows I can use DOUBLE SIDED ram in dual channel mode? I am just not sure if double rank is the same as double sided. http://members.optusnet.com.au/messenjah/ABIT.jpg
terryeast
Yes, they mean double ranked = double sided. According to that chart, the answer is yes, double sided ram sticks will work.
