smarkle
My ASUS mobo died and I am looking for a replacement. My CPU is a P4 3.06GHz 533 with a socket 478. I currently have a mobo shortlist of: Intel D865PERL or ASUS P4P800-E My questions are: 1. What speed DDR memory will work with my CPU? On the Intel website they said the D865PERL mobo with a P4 533FSB CPU should be married with PC2700 memory. On the ASUS website they recommend PC3200 memory with the P4P800, but do not say anything about the CPU. Could you perhaps make a memory recommendation based on either mobo and the 3.06 533 CPU? 2. It seems that memory often comes in 2 flavors: regular & value select. I am not a gamer, but am looking more for system stability. Can you help me understand the difference? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 11, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 11, 2005 First thing, with a 533 FSB CPU you would be limited to DDR333 this is a chipset limitation. And either MB should run great and to give you some upgrade path I would use VS1GBKit400 with the ASUS MB, but if you get the Intel MB you may have to use DDR333 memory or it may not post. Excellent, thank you for the recommendation. I am inclined to go with the ASUS & VS1GBKit400. Do you feel pretty comfortable this combination will work with the 533 FSB CPU? Also, on the value select. My most intensive application is video editing. Is the value series just slightly lower performance...but still reliable? Corsair Employees RAM GUY Posted March 11, 2005 Corsair Employees Share Posted March 11, 2005 No you would do better with 2 modules, either 2 512 Meg modules or 2-1.0 Gig modules. If you need 2.0 Gig of memory I would suggest VS2GBKit400. And yes our Value Select would be comparable to generic memory maybe slight better performance but they come with our lifetime warranty. Out XMS line of modules would offer better performance.
