Corsair Twinx XMS3200 - one module bad !

Recommended Posts

Hi RamGuy,

My Corssair Twinx 512MB (2x 256MB XMS3205v1.1) is a little older than one year. It worked fine until now.But recently I started getting BSODs,games kept crashing and system stability programs like Prime95 would not run anymore.

I figured that it might be the Ram so I used 2 programms to test the 2 modules.

I used MemTest from http://hcidesign.com/ and also Memtest86+ !

One module works just fine-the system is stable again. No crashes anymore! It passes all the memory tests !

The other module seems to be faulty. When using MemTest from http://hcidesign.com/ I get many errors within a few minutes. The working module didn't cause any errors in hours!

This is why I am pretty certain that one module is not working like it's supposed to. I live in Germany. Is there a Corsair branch in Germany I can send the faulty module to ?Shipping to the US would be kinda pricy !

Thank you for your support,

Regards,

Can you tell me the make and model of MB you have along with the CPU speed and it’s FSB as well? In addition, please tell me the bios settings you have set for both CPU and memory and any performance settings that you may have set?

OK:

I have an AMD Athlon64 3000+ Winchester CPU ,MSI Neo2 Platinum Mainboard !

The CPU is running at 1800Mhz - FBS200.All memory settings are set to Auto which sets the memory to 2-2-2-6 ! Memory is running at 200Mhz,voltage is set to Auto as well !

No performance settings have been set/everything is set to default !

Thanks,

Please set the timings manually and set the Dim Voltage to 2.7 Volts:

Dim Voltage to +.2 Volts:

CAS Latency CL=2.0

Row Cycle Time tRC Bios Default

Row Refresh Cyc Time tRFC Bios Default

Ras# to CAS# delay tRCD 3

Row to Row delay Bios Default

Min Ras# Active Time tRAS 6

Row Precharge Time tRP 2

Write Recovery Time Bios Default

Write to Read delay Bios Default

Read to Write Delay Bios Default

Refresh Period tREF Bios Default

Enable 2T Timing Disabled

Then test the system with http://www.memtest.org and make sure it's stable! If you have problems, I would set Enable 2T Timings to AUTO and test it again!

Hi Ram Guy,

Setting the tRCD to 3 did it. The other settings didn't matter. The system runs stable when the tRCD is set to 3!But doesn't this mean, that this one module is faulty anyway because it should be able to run at a tRCD of 2 without making my system instable. The working module can be set to tRCD 2 and still the system will run. The sticker on the module says that its speed is 2-2-2-6 !

Thank for your help,

Depends. What is the part # of your memory?

3200, 3200LL, 3200C2, or 3200XL?

FYI, Athlon64 CPUs are known to not like the tRCD being set to 2, so that may be the problem as well, but please post the part # anyway.

Thanks for your help but I still think there's something wrong because the sticker on the Ram says , 2-2-2-6 , which means it should work with the trcd set to 2.Another weird thing is that one module works when the trcd is set to 2 and the other one doesn't ! Plus both modules used to work with the timings set to 2-2-2-6! I don't get it :(

XMS3200LL should be Cass 2-3-2-6 with the Rass to Cass set to "3", so you should be fine.
