Stever
Ram Guy please help me before I give up and sell these module on E-Bay. I have built a new computer system consisting of a AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 , a Asus A8V deluxe board and TWINX 1024-3200XL module . After having problems with Windows XP crashing . I used Memtest 86 on each module and found out one was bad . I sent both back and received my warranty replacements today. I put the new ones in but after playing WoW for about 5 min. the game crashed. I ran Memtest 86 on both modules together and started getting error messages on tests 3,4 and 6 . I tested the modules one at a time, both passed now I am really comfused. I called the tech guy on the phone and he helped me set the bios but it doesn't seem to have helped at all. Now what ? Here all the information I have if you need more let me know . Stever
Can you tell me the make and model of Power Supply you have? At first I wondered why you wanted this information, but after thinking about it I can see if there is some voltage problem it could be effecting the memory. I will have to look into it some more . I have a 300w power supply in my old computer and I think I will swap them this weekend and see what happens and no I can't test the modules in that computer because it uses rambus memory. (they still make that type?) My system is protected by a APC battery backup and surge protection unit which prevents spike and brown out to the power supply. Here is the info you asked for about the power supply. Aspire ATX Switching Power Supply model atx-as500w ac input 115v/230v ~ 10/5a 50-60 hz +5v +3.3v combined load 200w +12v +5v +3.3v combined load 400w total power 500w not sure what that all means but hope it helps. Thanks.
Wired
It's most likely your PSU. Also, don't forget that battery backups and surge supressors have a relatively short lifespan. After that lifespan ends, they could hamper the flow and cleanliness of the power coming from the wall.

If the power supply is bad it has to been defective when it was bought, I got the case and power supply at the same time as the motherboard , cpu and memory so it only 2 months old. Is there a way to monitor the PSU to see if it defective? Thanks.
leeghoofd
the PSU is not defective it just cannot handle the power drawn from it, you need to check at least 20 amps at the 12 volt rail , you have mega super duber components in your rig but your PSU is good for a rig of at least a year ago. Get a beefy PSU like the ones from eg Enermax 400 or more watts is fine but you need to check the 12 volt rail (thats where the juice is needed) Also don't believe in cheap 500 watts PSU's they are mostly crap and won't give you the power you need, Invest in a good PSU and it will stick by your side for a very long time !! WAttage means nothing AMPS is where the game is at !!! Also for your rig check out http://www.asusboards.com and look into the A64 section with VIA chipsets. Good luck let us know what gives

After installing the new PSU I just starting changing memory settings to see what happened. One of the things I tried was changing the McLock to CPU to 5:3 DDR 333 . This worked great, Memtest 86 errors stopped and I guess I can live with this. Now what I am wondering is it a problem to run this memory at that setting will it cause any damage to the modules? Also just out of curiosity what are those metal wire things on the modules? Do they do anything ? Thanks.
leeghoofd
Well I just think you have a bad mobo Stever, If the mem dimms pass the DDR40 memtest one dimm at a time then there must be something wrong with the Dimm slots of your motherboard. If I was you I would check out http://www.abxzone.com/forums/showthread.php?t=74370 for more settings and help regarding your problem, you should be able to enjoy the full speed of your rig without any hassles or special lower settings. Surely because you spend big cash on high quality hardware.
