Commander Pro installation help

Heya

I just brought the commander pro + 3 RGB fans - how easy is it to install on an existing system? I'll be replacing three of the 140mm fans (to start with) and adding 1 or 2 led strips as well. I've never done more than replace gfx card or ram myself...so a touch nervous of doing something wrong!

Is it fairly straightforward? Are there any good guides for adding to an existing system, rather than a complete new build?

For information, just in case it is required -

Case, Carbide 600C

MoBo, Maximus Hero X

Cooler, H115i PRO

2 x 140mm fans at the front, 1 x 140mm fan at the back and 2 x 140mm fans as part of the cooler.

I'll be replacing all the existing fans with the ML140's.

Thanks for any help.

It's fairly straightforward, IMHO. The biggest challenge is in managing the cables. I would recommend not fully mounting it until you are sure of the location as well. Or mounting with something like 3M Command Strips to it's easier to move/replace the adhesive.

One tip: do not use a Molex=>SATA adapter; use straight SATA for power.

You might want to make sure you read over the RGB FAQ linked in my signature as well.

Hey, thanks for the reply! I found that guide after my post, and it certainly does have a lot of info. The diagrams were especially useful.

I'll give it a go and come back here if I have any problems.

One quick question - I plan to replace all fans currently with ML fans, to ensure the RGB effects are the same. Will this be okay? I tried to research what is best (ML, LL, SP, HD, and another one I think...) but it got confusing with mixed answers. I went for ML as it seemed the best of both worlds (cooling and noise levels).

The MLs are, really, the best performing of all the RGB fans and the quietest. The only downside is that they have the least RGB to them ... which is why many folks go for the LL or HD fans. And they are super-quiet; the HD fans have an annoying hum at high RPMs. So yes, it will be OK. Absolutely.

Personally, I have LL, HD and ML fans in my system. Yes, that's right ... all of them.

The MLs will be plenty of fan for your system. I have most of the same hardware and I don't ever have a reason to run the fans on the H115i PRO faster than 900 rpm. At speed, the ML fans are going to be slightly less noisy than most other fan types. I can run them about 200 rpm higher for the same amount of noise. However, that isn't necessarily needed. All of these fans will get the job done and I cannot find any measurable temperature difference between my HD and ML-RGB set ups. I would choose you fan type based on the one you find most visually appealing.

Thanks, that is reassuring! I decided on the ML's partly due to the lower number of LED's - I like the effects but don't want them to be overpowering. I also didn't want to mix and match the different LED's across the fans, so sounds like the ML's will be ideal. Quieter the better!

Sorry to ask another question, but I may have just confused myself...

According to the set-up I want (5 fans and 1/2 lighting strips) the best diagram in the guide is the second from last one. However, rule 11. on that guide says -

RGB fans will NOT work plugged directly in to Node Pro or Commander Pro, you MUST use the Corsair RGB Fan LED Hub

This confuses me...as the fans come with a Lighting Node PRO?? I tried searching SCAN for a "Corsair RGB Fan LED Hub" and it returned no results.

So, the fans in a dual pack do not come with the correct controller to actually use them? Super confused now!

I purchased the dual pack (comes with a LNoPro), a single one, the CoPro and the LNoPro (as that is the only way to get the strips). Am I going to need to buy something else as well??

The corsair RGB Fan LED Hub, is a hub where you connect the fans from 1-6, if you have 4 fans you fill port 1-4. Then from the LED hub you connect to one of the lighting ports on the commander pro or a Lighting Node Pro, you don't need both.

The RGB Fan LED Hub should be included in those fan packs, they look like this. They are powered by sata and there is a 3 pin rgb digital cable which goes from the hub to the CoPro or LNoPro.

Spot on..... Maybe I need to reword some of the FAQ?

I think this might be a wording thing, cos the Lighting node pro shown here https://www.scan.co.uk/products/140mm-corsair-ml-series-ml140-pro-rgb-7-blade-pwm-4-led-rgb-magnetic-lev-dual-fan-pack-with-lighting looks identical to the RGB fan LED hub shown here https://www.corsair.com/uk/en/Categories/Products/Accessories-%7C-Parts/PC-Components/Cooling-And-Corsair-Link/CORSAIR-RGB-Fan-LED-Hub/p/CO-8950020

Can someone confirm they are indeed identical but just named differently??

I have also edited the FAQ

RGB fans will NOT work plugged directly in to the Lighting Node Pro or Commander Pro, you MUST use the Corsair RGB Fan LED Hub which then Plugs into a Commander Pro or Lighting Node Pro

Great addition, I think it will also help if you could also add it as a text under the fan section in your FAQ. I think most people will read the section relevant to them e.g. only read the fan section if you bought fans.

Hows this?

RGB Fan & LED Strip Specifications

Note. None of the below Fans/Fan Kits are supplied with a Voltage/Pwm Fan controller of any type. For this sort of control (in Corsair iCue/LINK) you would need a Commander Pro

And all Corsair's RGB fans need to be Connected to a Corsair RGB Fan LED Hub and the RGB Fan LED Hub goes to either the Button controller (HD RGB and SP RGB fans only) or Corsair's Commander Pro or Lighting Node Pro

Hello again, sadly...

So my gear came today and I took a look at it/my motherboard. I got it figured out in my head how it all works but there is a problem - I only have 2 internal 2.0 usb connectors on the mobo and they are both being used (unsure what for - how do I check??). What do I do now?? I could disconnect 1 but I've no idea what I will be disconnecting.

Is there some kind of splitter I can buy, which will allow more things to go into the 2.0 usb ports on the mobo? Or something which will turn one of my external rear 3.0 ports into an internal 2.0 port?

Mobo is an Asus Maximus Hero X.

Thanks.

The Commander Pro have two usb 2.0 port, so you can connect your commander pro to your motherboard internal usb header and then you have two extra from the commander pro.

Else you can buy the NZXT Internal hub which gives you more ports and use that.

Thanks for the tip, I have just bought the hub thingy you suggested. The 2.0 ports on the mobo are pretty tightly placed against the top of the case, so getting what is in there now out, will be tricky. My fingers are not small!

If any of you know the Carbide 600C, can you remove the panel at the top which houses/hides the PSU easily/at all?

Nevermind the question at the bottom about the case, I found a Youtube video of how to remove it!

Update - I have been able to instal both the NZXT USB hub and the RGB Hub & CoPro! iCUE recognises the CoPro and I updated the firmware so that is positive! Next is to add the fans/strips this weekend.

1 question - should iCUE also recognise the RGB hub, or will it only recognise the CoPro as the "master" controller? I assume so, but wanted to be sure.

Hi Buddy.. no iCue wont see the RGB Fan LED Hub... you will see the CoPro and have options for Lighting from there direct to the fans

Success! Well, mostly...the fans are installed, work great and the lighting looks awesome.

One thing though, the LED strip isn't being detected. I plugged it into the LED 2 slot on the CoPro (LED 1 is obviously the RGB hub) and selected lighting strip - 1 strip in iCUE, but nothing happens! The fans worked straightaway.

Any thoughts?

Did you add a lighting effect to the channel? And make sure that it was applied to all LEDs on the strip?

Yep! It's set to lighting link, the fans sync up with everything but the strip does nothing. I've double checked the connections.

Maybe I'll change the LED strip and see if I got a dodgy one.
